Elon Musk offered to buy and then delete Facebook: https://alternative-science.com/technol ... k-facebook

FSF meanwhile plans to purchase the embattled Facebook website and overhaul the entire site to become the world's largest privacy respecting, free software and free JavaScript-based social media platform. They've launched a crowdfunding campaign for that: https://www.fsf.org/blogs/community/fre ... y-facebook

... and in fact, as far as the actual buyout offer is concerned, seems you may wish to note same as to first sentence/paragraph as well.

It seems likely that Facebook will soon decline, and that another social network will replace it. Hopefully, I can meet all of you there in the future.
Problem is not exists Facebook or not. Will another social network or not.
Poroblem is: population of idiots remains the same. Same! Who those idiots? They are those who voluntarily opens worldwide his personal life for a show then complaisn that this information is used for other purposes. Size of directory /dev/brain/ is null.

........
I don't do social media , but obviously I know many people who do .

There appears to be better ways of doing these things , but as with alternatives to Skype , it's not going to gather momentum
unless people persuade their friends and family to make the change , and migrate all of their contacts .... and that's a big ask !
But who knows ? ..... a groundswell of changing public opinion can sometimes have the power of a tsunami .

Someone also mentioned Friendica ( ? ) as an alternative , so it is looking like "open season " on Facebook at the moment
" And so it goes " - Kurt Vonnegut
The modern reality and the satirical parody are rapidly converging .

Kudos!

I also deleted my account. I simply don't trust them, the government or people in general. This mess confirmed what I always feared: Steve Bannon having access to ANYTHING associated with me.

But yeah, I'm done. Small circles are strong ones. I do have a couple ppl I need to stay in contact with from FB but I'll find other ways.

Honestly, I don't miss FB or Twitter. At all.

I'm not shure if I'm going to delete my facebook. I still have some friends on it that don't want to move to something else, and I want to stay in touch with them.
So probably I'm going to deactivate and only log in once a month or with birthdays / holidays

Mozilla launched a petition just now: Facebook needs to be accountable to all of us

In light of Europe's strong new data protection laws which will come into force on May 25th, Mozilla's petition calls for Zuckerberg to also face tough questions from European legislators in the European Parliament and set a global precedent.

You can sign the petition here: https://foundation.mozilla.org/campaign ... arliament/

Signed.

I have by no means watched all of Mark's testimony on The Hill, but from what I have watched, I would say this is another very scary situation for us, the people of the world, because while certainly some of the senators have a degree of technological literacy, it was obvious they (once again) really have limited capacities for true understanding of what's going on. At the same time, I think to the degree that Mark and the other members of the board who've spoken in interviews, it's also obvious there are a lot of oversights made over the years FB has been around. I also think there were numerous instances in Mark's testimony where he was deliberately dodging issues and trying to limit personal damage while still trying to sound contrite.

It's going to be interesting to see how this all plays out.
