PureVPN Money Back

Post by wf54 »

Question, has anyone managed to get a refund from PureVPN?

After around four hours of trying to install from the manager, which they say that it supports. I decided enough was enough and ask for a refund under their three day money back guarantee.
The response from them was for me to download the packages once again and use more command line instructions, which failed by the way.

Makes you wonder about all the great service reviews, if you ask for a refund you don't want to mess about with another attempt..
Waiting for another reply, it's as though they are trying to stall until the three day refund period, then say tough  .

Got a reply saying that there should be no problem with a refund but could I give it another go.
Since I'm hopeless with the terminal, I thought why not,
So I allowed the assistant took over my desktop, what the hell he's an expert and I may have made a silly mistake in the hours that I failed.
Two hours later, the chat closed down and ask for my vote, I still had several windows open including the terminal and no way to contact them.
Another email requesting refund, see what happens,
I was going to go for Nord VPN but was put off by the reviews saying it was difficult to set-up on Mint.
If PureVPN was supposed to be easy God help me with Nord then.

As for the refund, they have been as good as their word, so it's first class on that score, just not idiot proof to use. :)

wf54,

Do they make vpn configuration files available to download that are imported from network manager :?:

That procedure is pretty simple.

Hi wf54,
VPN s come in a broad range with lots of opinions so it really depends exactly what you are looking for from a VPN.

There are VPNs that can be used from your browser by simply adding a browser extension sometimes called an add-on. You will have to sign-up for an account but the installation process could not be more simple - add an extension to your browser. Some are even free. That said I have not tested any of these so cannot vouch for how good or effective they are so you would have to try them out and/or research them. However one that comes highly recommended from a trusted source IMO (Security Now) is Tunnel Bear.

I use Private Tunnel which is associated with OpenVPN. I like the performance (speed) I get, which seemed to be a big issue with other VPNs (some that other folks swear by on this forum so I will not mention names to prevent getting a flame war strted). I guess the bad thing is that they do not have a GUI for linux and everything has to be done from the terminal. For me that is no big deal but I can appreciate that the terminal is a show stopper for you. However I will add that the instructions are straight forward and easy. You may want to go to the site and look them over to see if you are comfortable with them.

PureVPN has a FF addon that works,

My PureVPN account is on Annual Renewal darn it, I decided against renewing it, damn, saw an email the very next day that my renewal for 'next year' has already gone thru.

I am turning Auto Renewal OFF on everything now, that is the last one that I had overlooked.

OpenVPN installed and worked "out of the box".

even after talking to a 'native American sounding" CS agent on PureVPN who helped me get it installed on my 18.3 Cinnamon, bit quit working the very next day. so I deleted it.

I use NordVPN and have found it to be very stable and reliable with Linux. Installing it isn't hard, (even I managed not to stuff it up) just follow the instructions on NordVPN's download page
When all else fails follow the instructions

While the installation for PureVPN was a nightmare and even after taking over my computer for two hours.
They did honour their refund so in that respect for my experience I have to give them 10/10.

As a foot note I signed up with PrivateVPN and although the installation wasn't for Mint, and different, I installed it without a hitch.
Nothing is perfect though.
I've been informed that I have a IPv6 leak and to 'Please use OpenVPN port 1196 to connect or disable IPv6 on your GNU/Linux Mint system altogether'.
Looked on here, found a Nord fix using the Terminal but couldn't get it to work, there's idiot proof but I apparently need it to been gold standard idiot proof .

In hind site the leak must have been on while I was using IPVanish as Sky was blocking the same sights,
So is it possible that service providers using IPv6 as a means to block [spy] on you?

This really is confusing, I went to check the reviews and it seems to be a legit complaint against purevpn. As i've looked here https://www.topvpncanada.com/vpn-comparison-chart/ purevpn is based in hongkong also. and as for their reviews, I got redirected to https://ca.trustpilot.com/review/purevpn.com. All of them are pretty satisfied with purevpn. Now, I'm not saying I believe in these reviews but it really is a good way to bring down a competitor. Oh well what do I know, I'm just happy my PIA.

I look at reviews with much askance...

the competitor creates a sudo posting account and then knocks down the other guy for having a bad product.

if you have looked at the app reviews in Play.Store.Google.com it is very easy to see where the Developer has had a few of his buddys post up mind swelling reviews rating his app at a '10' stars when the system only accepts 5 stars...

or, there will be a hand full of really crappy reviews that state how bad this app is, and that it won't do as stated....

all that, and I have used the app in question and know of its' worth... and then I think "hmmm we have a rat in the wood pile here"

I've been using Express VPN for over a year now (Paid Subscription) I have it installed on my Synology RT2600ac Router and been very happy with the service and connectivity it provides. I prefer setting up the VPN on my router as it provides VPN service to all my wired and WiFi connected devices. Their customer service is very good as well. They have set-up instructions for all the OS's on their web site.

I'm going to call AT&T and see if I can get access to their ISP modem and do that.
I am on a DSL internet hookup..... live in a very rural area.

the only alternative is ViaSat which a tad bit expensive.

don't know why this thread showed up as an Unread Post today....

but since it is here, a comment on VPNs and satellite connections.

they don't mingle well together..... the VPN causes timeouts galore, and I have just about zilch to hide anyway.

I have a 2 year subscription to NordVPN and it works well, or it did before I left AT&T DSL in the dust.... 27 outages in one 14 hour period was more than I can deal with....

32 days now of Satellite service, and only one outage, down for maintenance, and it came back with a roar!
the speeds I am getting are almost twice what they were.

FWIW, I have abandoned using VPN, I just don't think it is worth the trouble, and the delays it causes.

I did manage to get my refund back after requesting them a number of times. The support guy was hell bent to continue with their services. I have heard now that they have improved but this review on purevpn speaks otherwise.
However I have made a decision that I might return with this VPN if they really improve the product and its services.

PureVPN kind of lost the trust after their no-logs scandal. I'm not saying it's a bad VPN but it probably depends on what you're looking for, it's good they're refunding though. Regarding security two VPNs, Surfshark and ExpressVPN, went through independent audits conducted by Cure53 to prove their privacy protection features so if anonymity is in question I'd go for these two.

I didn't like what I was finding on Purevpn, ProtonVPN and Nord (among others, but those two run top list on many so called "review sites") when in the market back in November.

due your own due diligence to satisfy wants and needs based on why VPN is desired, however, consider if you want simple and reliable ISP and snoop free comms then take a good hard look at PIA, Mullvad and AirVPN (I've been using all three these past few months, look for big discount on Airvpn every black Friday weekend). each run about $5usd/month

and while it could be argued this post is on a "competitor" site/forum to Nord, it does have good info and links to chase showing how creepy Nord really is (imo)

If you want easy and fast give Mullvad a run, free for a few hours trial, and only a "username" for login (just don't lose that info, lol. They also support "double hop" which is really cool. and they run Wireguard now(!), the only VPN provider beside Azurevpn (iirc) to offer it and even though wg project considers itself beta it is hardcore solid and fast in my case use so far and definitely the road ahead in VPN as OpenVPN is bloated and slow in comparison.

edit to add: forum post linked to is fleshed out here:

I used to have PureVPN, but it kept unhooking and having to change the password too frequently caused me to quit.

I switched to NordVPN a couple years ago, when they sent me an offer for 3 years at $99.00

for the rare occurrences, that I need a VPN, it is okay... but still a PITA because the password changes every month.

also, the fact that it introduces a LOT of Latency, and slows down my connection, caused me to quit using VPN for anything for normal forum browsing.
I don't have anything anyone would want.... retired, and no government secrets to reveal.

the only reason I use it now, is to change my country of origin to enable me to get access to some documents once in a blue moon.

The speed drop is inevitable nuisances with all VPNs unfortunately, Surfshark offers good connection speed but it depends on the location of the server you choose too.

Regarding passwords it's irritating yet another inevitable issue, some providers ask their users to change it frequently in order to avoid leaks (you can see lots of stolen VPN accounts on shady forums).

Last but not least it's not always about what you have to hide. If a hacker obtains your social media logins or has remote access to any of your devices they can do bad things in your name thus hurting your reputation or worse. Here's a good interview on how hackers think and what they can do.
