Suddenly can't connect to a https site

Post by Schultz » Sun Apr 22, 2018 5:57 pm

There is a https site that I had been going to regularly for close to a month now. It is a forum (Devuan's, I've been dual booting lately) and just this Saturday night I registered on it and made a post, then signed out and closed the tab. After about just 5 minutes, I decided I wanted to go back to it. At that point all of a sudden I started getting this message . . .

Secure Connection Failed
An error occurred during a connection to dev1galaxy.org.
SSL received a record that exceeded the maximum permissible length.
(Error code: ssl_error_rx_record_too_long)

. . . and it's been happening ever since. I've tried the other two computers in the house (both Win 8.1), and all other available browsers (Pale Moon, Basilisk, Firefox ESR, and IE on the Window computers), and none of them can connect to this site. I posted this also on Pale Moon's forums, and two people there comment they can connect there with no problems. So it seems like something got borked on my system, but I don't know how or what. I've searched the web, but most suggestions are either geared towards the servers and not the end user like me, or other suggestions I just don't understand. Does anybody have any ideas?

It's in the error message: https://dev1galaxy.org/

I'm also getting a different message on my son's computer. On his I get this:

Your IP address has been tagged as dubious. If this is in error, please contact dev1galaxy forum administrators on #dig-users at freenode.

Surely you've been around long enough to know to wrap the output in code markers. That's how details get missed.

If it's occurring only on that site then the problem is in one of two places. The site itself or the route your packets take to the site.
There are no silly questions, but there are silly answers.

I get to a page with the title The officially official Devuan Forum!

I would suggest contacting the site administrator as maybe your IP is being blocked :?

Thanks for the help WharfRat.

I went to my local library and sent a message to one of that forum's administrators. He sent an email back letting me know it should be fixed soon, and included the following:
We have aggressive spam filtering methods in place on the forum. One of them is a "snaplock" which blacklists "dubious" IP addresses. It has happened to me twice when my IP address changed due to some work on the cable.
It seems a little bit too aggressive to me.

Also, I hope my post here didn't "offend" anyone. I know there are a lot of Mint users that dual boot with other Linux distros (and now I am one of them).
