The "fox" is buying the hen house??? Microsoft purchases Github

Post by DAMIEN1307 » Sat Jun 02, 2018 10:22 am

You may have all come across an article today about Microsoft intentions to try to buy Github..price tag is about 2 billion to 5 billion USD but that should be "chump" change for M$...It seems that M$ is just lately, after Steve Balmer, embracing everything that is open source...Is it possible that they see that Win 10 might not be a sustainable entity looking towards the future?...Is it possible that they may be trying to totally gain control of open source?...Is it possible that its nothing more than a benign business decision with the very best of intentions?...you decide...im just dropping this tidbit and running like hell away from it ...lol... Windows is totally safe in the desktop market. It's the server (cloud, web apps etc) stuff they're desperately trying to break into. They're way behind in cloud computing. Hence their interest in Linux. BTW there are many corporate contributors to the Linux project (ie the kernel), and MS has been one of the biggest ones for years now.

I see the MS accountants looking at the numbers and screaming, "Which idiots thought this was a good idea?!" I expect the same chorus is ringing through halls at Amazon, Google, Oracle, IBM, etc.

GitHub has $200M in annual revenue, so even the $2B estimate would be too high for a sensible ROI and PSR. Also, the investment councilors would point out it is likely large number of developers would flee GitHub if MS were to gain control.

Yes, agree.

If M$ buys up Github, M$ will be able to spy-on or "steal" projects and ideas on Github, and incorporate them into Win 10 as if they were her own, eg projects and ideas by Open-source or Linux developers, ... as has happened at Sourceforge .... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SourceForge#Controversies

M$ is mostly a copycat, eg Win 10 1511/1607/1703/1709/1803 is a blatant "copy" of the release cadence and inplace upgrades of Ubuntu 16.04/16.10/17.04/17.10/18.04.

During the late 1980s, both M$'s Win 1.0 and Apple's Lisa/MacOS copied the GUI of Xerox PARC's Alto/Star ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_o ... _interface

Not a good idea. Let's hope this doesn't happen.

They can do that now as a lot of OpenSource projects have there code there, free to download.
On Twitter I saw last night / early this morning a question if developers should go back to Sourceforge.
Sourceforge was sold / aquired in 2016 and the new owners got rid of all the add and malware that was bundled.
Another point was Github (the program) is closed source and Sourceforge is OpenSource

If M$ openly "steals" projects or ideas from Open-source/Linux developers, M$ will likely have to keep them Open-source and not Closed-source/proprietary, as per the GNU license. So, M$ will likely mostly "steal" non-open or closed projects/ideas, eg those which require log-in to Github for full access by developers/contributors.

Darn! I have to put my tinfoil hat on again.

Really, I have no idea how you can come up with these outrageous notions in the face of verifiable facts. Microsoft is, by far, the biggest contributor to open source. They have neither need nor reason to "steal" anything. If they did steal non open source software, the outcry would be enough to make their share price almost worthless. Good grief.

That is getting questionable as people (/r/linux folks) that went through the project history as of yet haven't been able to confirm the allegation that code on Microsoft's project was taken from the other project. Regardless, Microsoft is addressing it as an issue that needs fixing: https://github.com/Microsoft/web-build-tools/issues/673.

So I reached out to people I knew at Microsoft. This was probably a year ago now. They were shocked and apologized. But since then nothing has happened.
Oh wait yeah, something did happen. The commit history of Rush was messed with and a lot of the code was moved around, functions renamed, rewritten. It still feels familiar, but it's more scrambled.
Instead of just updating a license or even just adding a footnote, they went through all that trouble.
Seems, after being found out, M$ tried to erase/delete traces of the company stealing code.

It's being addressed in public on Microsoft's GitHub. It's not being swept under the rug now. We can follow actions taken on the issue and project in public.

If you've done any development you know code refactoring can move a lot of code around, as can adding functionality or switching libraries, but that doesn't mean there's causation. Or there was, in which case I'll bring the tar and feathers

I'm never a happy camper when one company buys up another. I like my competition and highly competitive marketplace, thank you very much.

I positively hate it when Microsoft acquires another business.

As long as Atom doesn't suffer, I'm actually a bit happy to hear this for a few reasons:

(a). It's additional validation of the influence and value of open source. Even if GitHub itself isn't open-source, it's still the single most popular hosting site for all these open source projects (including Linux Mint). 2billion (rumoured) just to buy GitHub? Who wudda thunk it?!?

(b). I also really love GitLab and I'm not above hoping this increases their popularity and userbase.

Bloomberg confirmed Microsoft will acquire GitHub: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles ... ite-github. Shared statement expected later today.

Don't let it overshadow today's expected Linux Mint 19 beta release!

And... you can find me on GitLab

That's partly to prevent disgruntled Win 10 users from moving to Linux, eg Win 10 users can now run Ubuntu 18.04 via M$ Store. Previously, Win 7/8.1 could not.

Also, since M$ has already lost the Mobile OS war, M$ is trying to get Android users to use her proprietary programs/apps and services, eg Office, Edge, Bing, Cortana, etc.

M$ is also trying to get Linux developers to make apps/programs for Windows.

IOW, likely, M$ is by far the biggest parasite to Open-source.

M$ is trying this... M$ is trying that... Why to blame Microsoft for buying? Nobody can buy nothing without somebody who want to sell it.
Blame GitHub for this and that.

Yes, rich bullies are like M$. Blaming Github is like blaming the victim.

Some companies that M$ bought and tried to make something of it had turned to mostly naught, eg Hotmail, Fast Search and Transfer(= Bing), Nokia(= Win 10 Mobile) and Skype.
