Which having a go...

Post by AndyMH »

For those outside the UK, Which is a consumer organisation that tests/reviews everything from toasters to PCs. Most of their stuff in the PC arena is a bit dumbed down, I'm not even sure that they know linux exists*:

Time for us 'enlightened ones' to sit on the moral high ground and gaze down the mountain at the unfortunates in the MS swamp :D

it seems that the number of people that have complained to 'Which' has been steadily rising,
and thus 'Which' has been able to take up that issue with M$ itself.

unfortunately, 'Which' won't be able to solve the basic issue of M$ has a Lousy Operating System.
- but, maybe, some UK folks just may get some real support, for a change.
:)
the local version of 'Which' is Choice and does something similar.

I haven't subscribed to a magazine in over 20 years. In fact, the last subscription I had was for MacWeek, and I managed to keep it until they went under.

Once the Internet became the thing it is today, print media for technology concerns pretty much became little more than warmed-over last week's dog food.

Technology reporting is no longer about enthusiast-driven things and other commercial products with great use and innovation. It's all about marketing and paid or unpaid advertorials. Whether it's in the medium of print or the Web, it to me is all very much the same thing, and I just don't have an interest in any of it anymore.

I use technology for my own benefit and in the ways I see fit, and beyond that I just don't have an interest. There's no longer any mountains for me to climb or goals to achieve. Besides, most of technology these days is about rights restrictions and driving the bottom line of Wall Street, and I refuse to be a part of any of that.

This, of course, brings us to Which?, and in my view, they're catering to a majority demographic which does not want to be burdened with knowledge; they just want the latest gizmo or the latest spoonfed pablum. Those of us who walk a different path (i.e. are GNU+Linux users) in many ways have already opted out of much of society.

Now that brings back memories, but well over 30 years old. Going into the local newsagent in eager anticipation for this month's edition of Personal Computer World and/or Byte (Jerry Pournelle - we miss you). Back in the days when real computers had 64k RAM :)

Haven't bought a computer mag in decades.

"Which?" articles are largely absent of ANY mention of Linux. There was one invitation to submit ways you've saved money and I would love to have submitted something but not being a member prevented me from doing so; I would have said "I have LEGALLY avoided paying thousands of pounds by NOT having to pay for Windows licence fees for each of my machines plus software licence fees on top, also, in most cases, for EACH machine".

They won't attract Linux users (or comments) simply because they rarely even mention Linux. The choice of operating systems, according to them, is Windows or Apple OS for a PC or phablet, Android or Apple OS for phablet or phone. Having to pay to post such comments causes a cache-22 situation. No-one will correct them because Linux users are effectively locked-out of their reader base, possibly for commercial reasons.

To be honest I am not at all surprised. WHICH isn't as good as it used to be in many areas.
This thing on Windows 10 is really old news as is the thing mentioned on Apple. The article didn't mention the facts about the EUA which Microsoft use as a get out and others have said about. I totally agree that there is a total lack of any Linux, so anyone reading this wouldn't know there was a better alternative to using Microsoft or Apple.
Sadly WHICH seems to be going for popularism rather being to voice of the consumer, but perhaps in an era of falling sales it has to do so.
This is just my opinion as I have found that WHICH often contradicts other specialist reviewers etc in favour of one which they did with a router I wanted and purchased they contradicted every other review in favour of one which all the others said it wasn't as good so who do you believe?
