Speech recognition software

Post by GS3 »

I last tried speech recognition software over fifteen years ago and I found it to not be worth the trouble as, with so many errors to correct, it was quicker to just type. So now I thought I would have another look but my first search did not show anything really interesting. I would think Google would have this pat down by now but I cannot find anything.

Ideally I am looking for something that can interpret English, Spanish and several flavors of Chinese and convert them to text. It definitely needs to have a very low error rate because otherwise I am better off just typing.

I guess the options for platforms would be (1) online , (2) Windows and (3) Linux. I would prefer, if possible, to test online before I install anything.

Any ideas?

There's a lot of info here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speech_re ... _for_Linux

I'd guess if you have no objections to Google associating everything you talk about with the profile they have on you, it will probably give the best speech to text results. It should work on any computer with a microphone in Google Docs on Google Chrome.

HI GS3,

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

+1 for "xenopeek"'s reply. If you want voice (speech) to text (dictation), then using your browser with various add-ons is the easiest method, especially with Google Chrome or a Chrome / Chromium based browser, see links below.

There are other posts on this topic in this forum too...

I have watched medical folks try to use those things, they spend more time backing up and correcting errors than it is worth.

but, Google Voice on my cellphone darn sure is fairly accurate.

Yeah, it seems like this is not ready for prime time yet. I tried the online IBM and the results were quite poor. Of course, I was speaking like I normally do, with hmmms and pauses and that seemed to confuse the software. Maybe if I read like an automaton it would produce better results.

And I am not interested in having to go through a Google account. No thanks.

HI GS3, & Anyone Else Interested in this,

If you read my links to other posts on this topic you would see that using your browser, especially Google Chrome or a Chrome or Chromium based browser and installed "VoiceNote II" and or "Speechpad Voice Notebook" extension add-on, then speech (voice) to text can work very well, "VoiceNote II" worked fantastically well. I even have a video(s) showing it working very well in the link. I do not think you must have a Gmail account for these to work. If you do have a GMail account then one or more of the extension add-ons even added a speech (voice) to text option for creating (composing) an email without typing.

Hope this helps ...

I was having problems with Chrome so I removed it and now I use Firefox. If I am going to use anything browser-based it would need to work on Firefox. In fact I would prefer a stand-alone program from where I could copy-paste to whatever application I wanted.

Hi GS3, & Anyone Else Interested in this,

Today 06/28/2018, I just tested the superb Slimjet browser with "Voice Note II" Chrome extension add-on which you can also add as a desktop option, and it works fantastically well as usual. I also added the Gmail email dictation extension add-on which also works very well.

I have not been able to get this to work in the newer Firefox even though there is an option to add Chrome extensions.

Here is another option I have not tested but was referenced in my links, and I think you have to pay for after trial time.

this isn't voice recognition but you can try text-to-speech with festival. voices are still belong to year 1991 since linux doesn't really have natural voices yet.

this will at least give you something to play with https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8xdE37Lf14
also Mycroft AI from Quidsup https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUitCg2PCQo may be something to look at but only available as KDE plasma

Using the link above, I tried:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:benoitfra/google2ubuntu

and got:

'This PPA does not support bionic"

I tried the https://launchpad.net/~benoitfra/+archi ... .5_all.deb link and it installed but when run did not seem to do anything.

Does it work on Mint 19.2?

I'm using:
Linux Mint 19.2 Tina" MATE, Gnome, DESKTOP=Gnome, TOOLKIT=GTK

Many years ago (1999 or so), my then-wife wanted to use a talk-to-type program because she's dyslexic. (She also has a speech impediment, but we figured the program would learn its way around that.) While trying to train the program to recognize her speech (she had to read a paragraph and the program would highlight each word it recognized, or something like that), we discovered that she couldn't seem to mispronounce a word the same way twice. Eventually, she got the giggles and couldn't finish, and never did get it to work.
