UPS supply: How do they work and why are they needed?

I use an American Power Conversion APC Back-UPS XS1000 for my desktop PC, monitor, modem, and router. It connects to the PC with a USB cable. It comes supplied with software for Windows and Apple, but the program apcupsd from the repository works very well. As the name indicates (apcupsd = apc - ups - daemon) this s/w is designed to work with APC brand UPS's.

Whichever UPS you install, be sure to test it:
Plug your computer and monitor into a wall plug
Plug the UPS into a wall plug
Connect the PC to the UPS by USB or other type cable so the UPS can tell the PC that power has failed
Set the UPS to shutdown shortly after the power fails (say 1 or 2 minutes)
Unplug the UPS from the wall, wait for the timeout to expire and see if the PC shuts down in an orderly fashion

After a successful test, plug the PC and monitor back into the UPS instead of the wall plug and don't forget to change the timeout back to the desired value.

As far as an answer for shutting the NAS down, I don't think it would because the shutdown signal comes from the usb being plugged in to the computer. That's just my guess though, I've never researched it but there could be NAS's that have a usb port for that purpose, again it's just my guess.

And I also use a UPS mainly for my PC because I actually had an HDD go bad once from a power interruption years ago. It was only a split second, a light flickered but it was enough to shut the computer down and I happened to be writing a large file to the drive.
