Late last week I paid a visit to the village of Sidemen on the island of Bali to take a look at Mount Agung. The volcano had been quiet for several weeks. In the first image you can see steam rising from the mouth, just above the clouds, which is what the volcano had been doing for those several weeks.
As I was walking back to the vehicle I was travelling in there was a terrific, thundering BOOM! Some locals jumped on their motorbikes and started down the mountain, looking back over their shoulders as they went. Here is Mount Agung blowing not two minutes after the previous photo was taken:
You can see that the clouds going around the top of the mountain have shifted to the right.
What an awesome, once in a lifetime experience that was.

lol - yes. Funny though, as soon as my wide-eyed, now pallid-faced driver started back down the hill, it was over. My regular driver has promised to take me closer in December, provided the volcano has been stable. I'm looking forward to it.

I hope Mt. Agung is quieter in December, giving you chance to get closer. It is always active and its gods frequently remind the locals of their presence. It has has had a couple of big eruptions this year causing panic, movement of people and livestock and grounding flights.
As I have family on Bali I read the local news (online) daily just to keep track of what is happening there. The recent (this week) big eruption was with Mt. Rinjani on the island of Lombok - next island east from Bali. Both islands are great tourist attractions and Lombok is still in the process of dealing with the aftermath.

Sadly, yes. I felt the earthquake at around 4AM local time. Parts of Bali also got hit with king tides and 6m waves.
