Life and business pressures just over-whelmed her.

I want to help her out, but need to do it in the best way....
as an comparison - I'm currently helping an Guy who Owns a GoIf Course:
- this Golf Course has had a few owners & he bought this Golf Course several years ago,

the thing is, that the whole Rain Bird sprinkler system, is controlled from an interface box,
& that in turn is controlled by an Old PC running Dos-7

and every winter, he turn the system off, & every spring, when he turns it back on again,
- the Old PC fails to boot up
would you believe that it's an One Gigabyte Harddrive ??. the software is just 7Mb + the Dos files.

most other Golf Courses are using an Windows GUI interface together with an updated interface box,
but - - he is not wanting to spend the Thirty Grand to replace the whole thing.

then there is the Lightning strikes to the system wiring & thus the constant replacement of those remote box(s)

+

back on topic though - - it's an issue when I'm getting called from consumer grade folks,
that are Locked Out of their Office 365 because of some error with their M$ account / credit card link,,
and that there is no viable replacement for Office 365, even if you can get Office 2016 to install correctly
( once spent Two Whole days getting Office 2016 to install & even the M$ Techs were baffled )

this SaaS thing for Consumers // DaaS for Businesses is a great revenue maker for Microsoft, IMHO anyway,
- as it will break so regularly & thus require heaps of Tech Support. :(

LibreOffice totally replaced MSO & WordPerfect when I was on Windows 7.

In a lot of ways DOS Programs were superior to current Windows Counter Parts, for example Quicken for DOS was simpler to use & more secure by staying out of the Storm Clouds.

I wonder if FreeDOS.org project might be useful?

I thought DOS 6.6 was the last version before the GUI came along?
I still have a disk in my office unopened, labeled DOS 6.6

It might be PC-DOS 7, or M$ DOS 7 which was actually the OS that Windwoes 1 - 3 ran on.

it's a strange one - it's definitely MS-Dos_7 :o

technically that would have been win 95a or something, but it's not - ie: win v4.095a
- a VER command states what it is - MS-DOS_7

the thing is, that I've stuffed up, & I've chucked away the micro box,
That I'd planned to use, as an replacement. :(
& now, it's very tricky in finding an replacement.

it was DOS 5 / DOS 6x that ran win-3x & that got replaced by DOS-7 for win-95x series.

I stand corrected, you are right! Shows how long since I've played with DOS.

There are many entities with great interest in moving away from proprietary MS software. Big corporations and big governments for a start and they have much more power and clout and means and yet Linux, which seems the obvious choice, has not been able to gain a significant share of the market.

I think one reason is that Linux has evolved in many different directions resulting in a hundred flavors, none of which is totally finished and polished. It would have been better if Linux had maintained a single line rather than fork into a hundred different versions. As someone said: "The good thing about standards is there are so many to choose from".

In my case I do not find good support for Chinese in Linux Mint and I am thinking of giving a try to the Chinese versions
