LM Forums issues...

Post by Portreve »

I don't know if *I'm* the only one having these issues, but:

1. LMF suddenly refuses to play nice with log-in credentials and I have to re-log-in every single time I surf to this form; and
2. All the smilies show up as broken images.

Any thoughts, folks?

Any browser plugins that could be the problem? For the forum you need to accept and retain cookies from the *.linuxmint.com domain, as your login session key is saved in that. Perhaps some browser setting or plugin to block or delete cookies? If not that, are you perhaps using a VPN, proxy or other service where your public IP address changes frequently? The login session is valid only with the login session key from the cookies on the same IP address. If your IP address changes (or the cookies are deleted), you'll need to login anew.

The smilies are implemented as images, hosted on our server. If you can't see them I'd also consider perhaps if any recently installed or reconfigured content blocking browser plugins could be the cause?

No, nothing has changed on my end, xenopeek. This behavior began yesterday sometime and it's still present today.

Last week I cleared my Firefox cache and later that day, upon logging into the forums, I had to again agree to accept the forum cookie. It was a popup that appeared along the bottom of the Firefox window.

So...

I just tried Firefox (I hadn't set it up lately but I just signed back into my sync account) and connected, and everything is working perfectly.

This really makes no sense. Privacy Badger is installed and running in both browsers. I have AdBlock installed in Chrome but it happens by chance to be disabled. The only other extensions I have installed are Google Docs ones.

Thoughts, folks?

Since this began happening:
1. Have you closed then opened your browser?
2. Have you rebooted?
3. Have you tried a fresh browser profile?

I just had a weird thing happen. In the past when there's been connectivity issues with LMF, I've gotten the error about not being able to connect, and getting the 502 error, etc.

I just opened Firefox, and the LinuxMint default homepage just presented that same 502 page. Then, five seconds later, it came up as normal.

Are we absolutely certain there's nothing going on out there in the world with respect to LM's servers and things? Can the admins or mods here check into this?

I mean, if it's truly on my end, then so be it. However, if there actually is an issue out there, I'd rather you folks know about it.

Sorry, the mods have no way to check on things like this.

There was. However, I just now rebooted my router, and everything seems to be working. Chrome is fine (again). Wonder what the heck happened.

EDIT: I shut all my network devices off and unplugged my cable modem/router unit, and left it unplugged for some time while I had to fix a cheap-o cabinet/typewriter stand in another room. It was probably off for at least 10 minutes.

Ahh, nice work. It seems Sucuri must be routing their traffic through your router.

Most every day the power companies switch generators for maintenance, and if they have a bit of a lapse from one to another it has scrambled my router in the past. I now have it on UPS also so problem solved.

Ah - Yes - - I've got that in the last few days, as well,
but - it was only a once off thing - - whereas, normally that would last for a few hours, at least.

alas, I've never really worked out, just what is causing this:
- sometimes it's my MobileBroadBand connection
- sometimes it's the Sucuri Server itself.
it usually seems to Fix Itself.

The only issues I see apart from the occasional apperance of that oversized Sucuri error page (seriously, why can't that small amount of info fit on one screen?), are the odd page which never finishes loading - but that has lessened since the policy of using https:// for user avatars - although some still don't show up. Same happened when my own avatar (which is hosted via an https:// site) refused to appear for a short while.
