I like that idea in principle, and I hope they can get it to work right. Lots of potential problems, like it becoming just another darkweb, and you can bet Google and Facebook would use their considerable resources to kill it in its cradle. But it looks like the current Internet is broken at this point with just a few companies being its primary access points, and governments dialed into those companies and access points so that between the two entities privacy on the current Internet is dead.

More Google junk:
A few weeks ago Google shipped an update to Chrome that fundamentally changes the sign-in experience. From now on, every time you log into a Google property (for example, Gmail), Chrome will automatically sign the browser into your Google account for you. It’ll do this without asking, or even explicitly notifying you.

Have a look at the page source for a Google search page (without anything in the search box) & you'll see it's about 329 lines, some of which are several screenfuls each, of compacted, practically unreadable code. There are indeed references to one's Google and YouTube accounts; likely Gmail would show up there too if I had that. looks like they are for displaying one's username & avatar plus the links. Not sure what else, I'm lost in that mess.

Compare that with DuckDuckGo. 134 lines; some of which are blank (for formatting) & it's nicely laid out, making it easy to read. Nothing to hide there. In fact I'll post it here, hope that's OK:

Code: Select all

Not sure about Startpage. Their source is a huge monolithic one-liner, which I won't post here as it'd only screw up the post formatting.

I'll not bite except mentioning that that means DuckDuckGo is wasting your and their bandwidth. So if I were to argue on that same level then I'd say that if they don't even get that right, wonder where else they mess up.

Also they're a business same as everybody else. And they are tracking you just like everybody else, cookies and these tracking images, for example:

Don't kid yourself, they're a business like everybody else. If you don't pay for the product, you are the product.

True, but not a lot in real terms I'd think, not that worried. I just don't like running mountains of scripts in my browser with very little idea of what they are doing, just being paranoid on that level I suppose.

Thanks for pointing out the cookies, had forgotten about those. Should be fairly easy to deal with unwanted ones, which I used to do regularly but have gotten lazy.

No, valid consideration, you could even run a no-script plugin and disable javascript completely. Only problem with that is the Web 2.0 doesn't really work without javascript, but at least the search engines don't really need it.

As to "mountains of scripts", remember that there are both inline and external scripts. Both sites also reference external ones (although it's true that DDG is fairly light in that respect, whereas Google is apparently planning to go full social media on search results soon - possibly the moment they die off like other search engines seeking to re-invent the wheel did in the past, we'll see).

Well, not just the cookies, you'll also have to block those tracking images as shown in my screenshot. And even then you're still in their logs at least. You can never be invisible on the web.

I don't understand how anyone can think otherwise. This is true of most, if not all forms of outgoing communication which can actually be received. It should certainly be true of all two-way communication.
