If this weren't true it would be hilarious

Post by lsemmens »

Japanese head of cybersecurity knows nothing about computers! I want a job! I could tell him that I need a brand new Ferrari because there might be a virus in the computer that would make me run over a million people.

plot twist
except some known departments, Government Ministers do not need to be knowledgeable in the fields they preside, sure it helps, but ..not really, since its not their job they are not required to have the skill-set for it, that job is for the heads of their agencies & the people working for them & so on
what is their job then? mostly budgets, making regulations (& sometimes laws?), reporting bad news (lol), & representing the Gvmnt when dealing with other nations, & probably more..
basically they need to be good at negotiating, law, how to not look bad, & stuff like that

My ex boss (and like the British Prime Minister) knew nothing of computers, but if there was ever a problem that seemed difficult to solve, his answer would be 'well computers could solve it!' like they were some magic tool to be used when humans didn't know what to do.

It's my contention that it is impossible to really understand the problems of your computer using employees if you do not yourself know how to use a computer. But then again the culture of modern management is often about managing budgets and not managing people.

It is my practical experience that this is utter b******t. People in charge who know thing about what they're in charge of cannot help but make a mess of things. They can easily be manipulated and used as a pawn, a tool, or worse.

Everything you said is true, and I support fully the first half of it. I will gladly rail against the second half, and where possible have an impact on it, any day, any time.

Education and Environment are areas where specialists tend to groan about the decisions of ministers in UK. We'd hope they use specialist advice to make decisions, because they rarely have the educational background to understand the issues, but for some reason they don't. In UK every education minister wants to 'shake up the system' and unfortunately that is usually all they achieve, each and every time a new education minister is in power. Similarly, environment ministers get about 2 weeks training in an area that takes even a non specialist around 3 to 4 years of learning, and then they formulate political decisions based on their limited knowledge. Most of UK ministers study classics, english lit etc at university, thus giving them the time to get into politics in the first place.

As for the 2nd comment, I am a bitter and twisted old man
