Oh, good, I do like happy endings. Two thoughts.
1. I've done many Something Else installs. What happened here is unusual. At a guess, you inadvertently set sda to be formatted, which as I'm sure you know only actually deletes the partition and file tables.
2. This confirms something I've always recommended, just cuz I'm paranoid. To wit, make a system image before installing Linux. Worth having anyway.
