I've been happily accessing files on my Win 7 PC from Linux Mint 18.3 for a while now (thanks to Altair4's instructions).
Suddenly (yesterday, Thurs 10Jan'19) all connection attempts from Linux to the Win 7 PC were blocked due to a user/password login loop. I actually noticed it first from a Raspberry Pi ! Note the Win 7 PC could still access the Mint PCs, but the Mint PCs couldn't access Win 7
Searching the web revealed this explanation https://www.theregister.co.uk/2019/01/0 ... rk_broken/, and sure enough I had installed Win 7 update KB4480970 the day before.
Uninstalling KB4480970 as described at https://www.windowslatest.com/2019/01/1 ... rk-issues/ fixed the issue - note this took an extremely long time to complete and reboot. Samba communication is now working ok again.
I'm not sure what to do for a permanent solution (it's beyond my ability) but I wanted to let other Mint users know of the issue. Hopefully a permanent resolution will be achieved soon.
I'll mark this topic as solved once others confirm this works for them.

Hello, allenr,
You are aware that this is a Linux Mint forum, where you report a notorius Windows bug, introduced by mighty magic Microsoft in their fanatic January updates?
Microsoft screwed up their monthly updates one more time. Reminds me of the early Windows XP era.
Anyway.
It is a Windows problem. Nothing which the Linux developers can fix. In particular it is not a Linux issue.
Moving the thread to "Open Chat" as a consequence.
Best regards,
Karl

Maybe one day we will have to create a dedicated sub-forum "Notorious Windows bugs affecting Linux Mint" ?!

I'm thinking of adding a link to your post in one of my HowTo's if that is acceptable to you. Your observation is invaluable to those affected and since I no longer have Win7 in my universe it never would have occurred to me the issue was with a Windows update if it came up in the forum.
Thanks.

Yes indeed, but I wanted to warn and prevent other Mint users from hacking their Samba settings when the fault lay elsewhere. This was my reasoning for putting it in the Network > Other section.Hello, allanr,

No problem. Hopefully MS will produce a fix soon?? and avoid the need for more of your ingenious workarounds!altair4

The best solution to this problem is to get rid of Windwoes all together. Even when I was running an all M$ network I spent more time fixing one update than I ever have on a Linux system, and that includes installing Linux from scratch on 6 machines! Why bother with Windows if you want a system that is rock solid and "just works".

That is the route I have taken...It's costly, because I've got some important apps which don't have Linux equivalent.
If you're looking for a greener Linux pasture, you won't find any that is greener than Linux Mint. ;)
Re: SUDDENLY Windows 7 KB4480970 Blocks Access for Linux Samba shares
@allanr, I was about to add it to my HowTo but I checked your links first to see if there are any updates and there was:
And KB4487345 ( https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/hel ... er-2008-r2 ) states:Local users who are part of the local “Administrators“ group may not be able to remotely access shares on Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 machines after installing the January 8th, 2019 security updates. This does not affect domain accounts in the local "Administrators" group.
This issue is resolved in KB4487345.
So it looks like they fixed it. That was fast. This update resolves the issue where local users who are part of the local “Administrators“ group may not be able to remotely access shares on Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 machines after installing the January 8th, 2019 security updates.

Full of hope I re-installed KB4480970 and rebooted, and the Samba problem has returned (as expected).
I then ran Windows Update but that said "no updates for your computer". I had hoped the KB4487345 fix to be offered, not so.
I'll try again tomorrow to see if Windows Update voluntarily offers the 'fix', failing that I'll download it manually, re-test and report back.
Re: SUDDENLY Windows 7 KB4480970 Blocks Access for Linux Samba shares
UPDATE 2.
I ran Windows Update again today but it still didn't offer the KB4487345 'fix' voluntarily, so I downloaded and installed it manually, and can confirm this restores normal Samba operation between Mint 18.3 and Win 7.
If MS get around to providing KB4487345 with the regular Win Updates e.g. 2nd Tue of Feb, this issue could be viewed as a self-correcting blip, otherwise Mint users may need a reminder somewhere about this potential Win 7 Samba issue.
