Noticed you have Samsung SSDs. Did you have any troubles with them? I had to take mine back; threw too many errors, froze randomly. Found a couple of threads regarding Gigabyte boards/AMD chipsets that the drive didn't like.

Only once. I only use Samsung and the only time I had an issue was a few months back when I pulled the label off an NVMe that says, in part, "Warranty void if removed", so that I could get better heat conduction to the heatsink I'd installed. The drive was only a year old, possibly a bit less but failed within two weeks of pulling the label off - lol

Serves me right, I would say.

There's nothing wrong with a lower-spec'd machine as long as it does what you need. i5 Haswells are not rubbish

In fact I'd say he'd beat you silly in the "Eat My Non-waste of Computing- And Monetary Resources" thread. An i9-9900K with 32G and RTX 2080 to run a Linux desktop OS?

But what I wanted to remark on; your inxi report shows all cores at 5G so perhaps it was in fact generated while it was actually pretty loaded but if not I'd look at cooling; 77.0C is significant for an i9-9900K doing nothing much special.

And the problem with that is what exactly? You have absolutely no idea what I do with my machines or why. That you can't fathom a reason for such equipment does not entail that there isn't one.

The i9 is well known for generating heat under full load, and the included image clearly indicates that it was fully loaded on 16 threads for up to four minutes. As it is, the inxi readout is incorrect. The current idle temperature is 29C but inxi reports 50C. And finally, even if the CPU core was 77C, it would still be well within Intel's published tolerance for that model, and the CPU would intelligently throttle itself down when either TjMax, TDP or IccMax approached 10% of their respective maximums.

Applications are expected to run closer to TDP more often as the processor will attempt to maximize performance by taking advantage of estimated available energy budget in the processor package.

... the processor will immediately reduce its power consumption using modulation of the internal processor IA core clock, independent of the processor temperature. ... Thermal throttling using this method will modulate each processor IA core's clock independently.

It seems to be pretty good. Nothing to complain about so far. I don't do gaming ETC.. Just writing a lot. Also resurrecting a lot of scraptops.

Certainly not. It only entails that chances of there not being a good one are high enough to hint at it in a non too serious "Eat My Specs" thread.

Yes, other than that, I tend to at best glance at pictures; now see it was in fact loaded. I had recently been looking at that CPU and had noticed it to run (slightly) cooler than an e.g. i7-8700K. Just caught my eye that is. 29C at idle is perfect.

I'm not happy with the liquid cooler I have in the machine at the moment. It's a CoolerMaster RGB something or other. I bought it because the CoolerMaster Pro in my other rig is excellent but all I could find from my regular suppliers were RGB AIO coolers, and no plain old coolers without pretty lights in sight, no Pro models, nothing. So I was disappointed with this RGB AIO because the the heatsink is very thin compared to the Pro, and the radiator is very light in comparison. It seems that they've clobbered the quality to make price headroom for the RGB prettiness so I'm on the lookout for a replacement.

When I was looking I was also keenly ogling the Corsair H115i Pro for it. Starting to become a bit of a Corsair fan, also for cases and PSUs. Don't know how the Coolermaster would compare but Corsair is cranking out solid gear..

Yes, that was my impression too but given the track record I'd had with CM I was unwilling to switch at the time. I had to send back a NZXT Kraken because it died less than two weeks after installing it, hence my reluctance to risk yet another switch. I'll bite the bullet and give the H115i PRO a chance in a few weeks

Thing for me is that for a personal system not even the type of games I (can) enjoy, e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RClJ_DAotaA, decisively warrant upgrade yet, so for now it's the game of virtually assembling PCs at webshops and throwing it all away again once done. Booooring.

This has been my main machine for over a decade. In its day it was a step and a half behind bleeding edge. It is under-powered and temperamental. Worst of all, it still runs and it still meets my needs, which makes it hard to justify replacing it. Please try to curb your envy.

I'm way too old for those games

BTW, I just hammered my CPU with a Windwoes update applied to an 8-CPU VM as a real-world test. The cores throttled up and ran the whole ten minutes at 5000MHZ. The package temperature hovered around the 44C mark and never peaked above 56C.
