Mac Users

Post by HaveaMint »

A good friend I know loves the Mac and twice now has had her Safari hijacked by yahoo search. Has anyone had this and what did you do to solve it? I suggested to use her other Laptop with Mint on it and that maybe remove mac OS and put Mint on it, I couldn't out run her and got beat up.

Next time, wear body armor. Better still, give this advice over the phone as you're on the nearest interstate driving away from her home at a high rate of speed.

Can't you get Firefox for Mac?

It is now possible to load a bunch of browser on OSX, still don't fix the underlying issue (OSX) though.

If you think using Linux makes you impervious to browser hacks you are delusional.

I'm going with Hoser Rob on this one. The problem isn't the operating system. It's PEBCAK. (Problem Exists Between Chair And Keyboard)

She needs to stop clicking on all of the bovine excrement she sees on the web and use some common sense and judgement. Nothing hacks a browser until the user clicks on something to allow it to happen.

A friend of mine holds the view that not everyone should have (or be allowed to have) a computer. I happen to share this view.

Yes you can but not applicable in this case, sounds like a real Mac fangirl. You are speaking blasphemy.

This reminds me of the iPhone 4 vs EVO 4G video from a few years ago. I won't post a direct link here because the video is not children- or family friendly, and is most certainly NSFW.

Hijacked by simply entering a search? If that's the real reason than I would like to know HOW this is possible as well. Clicking on links from search results can't get your computer hijacked, can it?

I'm a Apple/Mac Maniac. I use an iMac 27", a MacBook Pro 15", 2 Mac Minis, iPad, iPhone, and an Apple Watch. That being said I have FireFox installed on all except the watch. And the older MacMini is single booting LM 19.2. LM 19.2 runs perfectly, and I've upgraded it from 18.3 through the releases without any issues. For some reason my MacBook doesn't get along with LM.

I would suggest that your friend buys a second hand MacMini with Intel Graphics and install LM, that way she'll have a fine computer and a solid OS.

Yes! Apple and its system means surveillance and a permanent and penetrating nanny. Like the other OS...

Even on this stupid system you can run alternative web browsers and load free software like GIMP, LibreOffice, Scribus, Inkscape and many more - and they work pretty well.

Does that mean beatings?... is different from case to case...

Now I understand HOW it could happen. Quite a nasty trick. In my Windows years, when I was used to install ANY software program without thinking, I have experienced many of these same sort of tricks. I can remember one freeware software program that had a countdown counter (10 seconds) within which I had to disable 3 different options or a new search engine would get installed! Gave me the creeps, but I kept the program, because it worked great.
