How to upload books for free download?

Post by deepakdeshp » Mon Aug 19, 2019 8:39 am

Hello,
My collegue has written some books and would like to host them on some site so that they can be downloaded from there.
How to go about it?
What are some free/inexpensive options for this?

By the way, I thought afterwards, there's also stuff like:
http://self.gutenberg.org/
https://wikibooks.org
and similar sites, might be more appropriate, depending on the type of book.

I will explore it. The files are .pdf. I explored smashwords but they require .epub and .doc books.
I tried converting from pdf to epub with

Code: Select all

 ebook-convert file.pdf file.epub --enable-heuristics
but itinverted the original book, that is the conversion was dark background and light text.

PDF is (essentially) an image format whereas EPUB and word processors formats are (essentially) not. That is, I in fact have a few free ebooks from smashwords and would recommend them; if these are books written by a colleague I suppose he'll have a more suitable source format to convert to EPUB?

Well, sure, but he will not have been creating "in PDF" directly; PDF is an end-product format, not a production one. Smashwords suggests Microsoft Word but also mentions Open Office explicitly. I expect he'll have been creating the books in a word processor? If so, get him to provide you with those (although you or he may have some style adjustments to do: https://www.smashwords.com/about/supportfaq#prep).

Hi deepakdeshp,

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

There are a few options for converting PDF files into epub files some are online and "Calibre" can also do that.

convert pdf to epub - Google Search
https://www.google.com/search?ei=xgxaXY ... gIbGziNZVs

As for providing a place where people can download the books, if you or your friend has a cloud account (free or paid for), you can upload the books in whatever digital format and get a shared link that can be added to a website, emailed, posted on a forum, etc... Does your friend have a website or blog website? If there is a website that is popular for the topics of your friend's books, then they might put the book(s) on their website for you if you contact them. Amazon is another good place to consider uploading his books.

Hope this helps ...

Thank you. No we dont have a cloud account or web site. I will find out what is the process is Amazon to upload the books. He is not planning to sell them on Amazon. I dont know if they will provide space when there is no sale involved.

Hi deepakdeshp,

You are welcome...

Apparently, Amazon.com does provide for authors to put their book(s) on their website whether they are free or to be purchased because there are other authors that are members of this forum that have books on Amazon.

Amazon.com - Author Central
- Create an Author account

Self Publishing | Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing
Self-publish eBooks and paperbacks for free with Kindle Direct Publishing, and reach millions of readers on Amazon.
