True that. Texas does have a few places where geothermal could be used (and is already in use). It can be "renewable" by using in-ground heat exchangers instead of directly pumping hot water from the ground.

The Austin area is one place that comes to mind.

Texans stuck with $US5,000 electric bills, officials say power companies 'grossly mishandled' the weather emergency
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-02-22/ ... m/13177926
As a result, some Texans who were still able to turn on lights or keep their fridge running found themselves with bills of $US5,000 for just a five-day period, according to photos of invoices posted on social media by angry consumers.

that's just plain crazy . .

they did something similar on the Aust E.coast,
and in Sth Australia .. you can also get some crazy high Power Bills,

they also had an State Wide power failure, an few years ago,
.. in some Bad Weather, of course . .

they still talk of how bad the National Energy Grid actually is,
but it's just in those three states , and part of an 4th state
as the rest are in an stand-alone situation, just like Texas also is.

ERCOT is going to get their panties whacked, the governor of Texas is legislating that customers will NOT be required to pay for those exorbitant inflated bills.

it is all due to Profit Marketeers doing Day Trading and shorting the stocks.
has nothing to do with the real costs of obtaining the resources.

I'm in Oklahoma, just a stone's throw from ERCOT, and our public utilities sent out an Email asking us to please be conscious of using electric power.... We dropped our Thermostat to 58*F and put on sweaters and two fluffy lap blankets over our legs while watching TV, etc.

we did not suffer at all....
My heating source is Natural gas, which the profit demons spiked the cost of to $10k to $20k per unit of use, so I just ensured that our furnace did not kick on very often.

we had 3 blackouts in one day, after that, no more blackouts.
I was fortunate, in that I had installed an Emergency Generator years ago.
rolled it out of the garage, started it up, then threw the Transfer Switch and the house was back to Normal.

There is only a small minority of Texas electric customers on those spot price contracts - the great majority of us have fixed price contracts. I pay about 9.5 cents/kWH including delivery, tax, and fees. My raw energy cost is 5 cents/kWH. My provider had to sell me electricity at that price even when they had to pay the spot price of $9.00/kWH. Or if they are an electricity producer rather than a middle-man, they had to sell it to me for the contract price instead of being able to sell it on the spot market. From my point of view, it's "winner, winner, chicken dinner"!

BTW, it was pretty day in Dallas today - high temp. of 75°F (24°C).
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they ain't.

Well, we are going from almost 0 F to 70 F today. In Texas if you do not like the weather give it a little time, and it will change.
