Guess this means that MS will be porting its viruses to Linux as well. :)
Not if you don’t download/install their garbage.

FWIW,

I set up my WiFi as a "Metered Connection", and the windows updates stopped.
I got a warning that Win10 1903 is full of bugs and to stop it with changing my internet to "Metered"

so far, that has worked like a charm.

this will be moot point when I finally get this laptop totally on Mint....
I hate windoze.

AV developers have become $billionaires based on the paradigm of ‘there’s one born every minute’.
I always suspected that they paid freelancers to write the malware then offer so called AV ‘solutions’ to fix the ensuing issues.

karlchen: It's Microsoft Defender now and a multi-platform tool, no longer Windows-specific.
Oh, I see, "one-size-fits-all" - usually those things fit no-one at all.
More to do with increasing cash flow than remedying any real malware issue.
Microsoft's expertise is in marketing not software development.
As they say "follow the money" in order to understand Microsoft's motivations.
They've perfected snake oil salesmanship to a science.

a) Pure, absurd conspiracy theory. I do not subscribe to it. Definitely not.
b) In case the statement applied, in this case AV software would be more successful in catching the malware than they really are.

That'll be the day when I start putting Microsoft's crap on any system I own.

I mentioned elsewhere on this board that I'm planning on buying a new(er) system sometime in the next couple weeks. I was considering Dell's OptiPlex 9010, but now I'm strongly considering their 7020 instead. It comes with a hard drive with Windows 10, so the very first thing I'm doing is pulling that hard drive and setting it on a shelf somewhere and putting in a new SSD, because there's no way I'm going to run Windows or have any lingering traces of it anywhere inside that machine.

Seriously! Screw Microsoft. I never have and never will trust them.
TOTALLY agree. I will never use anything from microsoft, a company named after the founders genitalia. Disgusting. I can't understand why people put up with anything from Micro Soft. Makes my head hurt to even think about using a windope computer. JUST SAY NO TO WIN DOPE.

Perhaps we should have a separate thread on just how M$ gouges users? I do want to add my bit in though:

M$ no longer stores the keys to M$ Office locally. This has been since Office2013. It only stores the last 4 digits. They want you to have a M$ dot com account and get your keys there. However, If you have not logged in to them in 3 years then your account is deleted. In reality the only reason to login to that account is to retrieve your keys and install program for re-install. M$ is certainly circling the drain as far as Im concerned.

Its about time everyone 'stuck a fork in it' and declared it 'done'. All winders is - is a platform for advertisements and data stealing. What concerns me now is M$ involvement with Linux. I think the linux community at large should be very careful about their relationship with M$.

Personally, I do not want some half-baked company that is only interested in advertising dollars and collecting personal private information to port their software for linux.

Microsoft hates linux and its just an evil plot to destroy our way of life.
MS doesn't want to destroy our way of life. It wants to own and control it.

Why is anyone surprised about this? MS has been greedily selling snake oil to its own users for years. No...wait a minute...make that, MS has been greedily ramming snake oil own its own users' throats for years. It was just a matter of time before MS went after its competition as well.

Windows Defender (more like Pretender) is a joke even on MS systems.

I will not argue with my fellow esteemed LMF members about the Microsoft point(s) made here. I would simply respectfully point out that, as we have all been forced to learn from the 90s onward, it's really critical to have and use software where we can pull the curtain up and look beneath at the code. Anyone doubting that we cannot blindly trust anyone — governments, corporations, anyone — is either really naïve or really stupid.
Please remember to mark your fixed problem [SOLVED].

The following is hypothetical!
It is possible that M$ wouldn't do anything like this. :?:
Probably a lot more subtle and sneaky way to prey on peoples fears.

I just had NIGHTMARE!
While using my favorite search engine for some info about firewalls or something or other security related, a subtle sidebar on web page shows up saying
"Your System May be Vulnerable"
"Microsoft Defender" is available for your system!
Out of curiosity I click on it.
A full blown page of possible viruses, malware and bunch of other scary stuff is listed. Along with a bunch of scary gifs, featuring devils, ghosts, etc attacking my PC.
A box at the bottom of the page "Clean and Save Your System"
Clicked on it.
This page pretty normal but its more like an infomercial. Asking you to watch a You Tube video showing you how great this product is with several prominent, beautiful and handsome, personalities attesting to its effectiveness.
Box on the bottom of page "Free Trial"
Clicked on it.
More infomercial type stuff. Serene, nothing scary. Soft elevator music. :?
For the low, low price of $9.95 and a very low monthly fee of $0.99/month we will keep your system safe!
"Scan Now" box, clicked on it.
Results:
Our scan shows that you may be infected. We can't be really sure until you disable your adblocker and firewall for us to do a thorough search and clean of your system!

Then I woke up, fell asleep in front of the boob tube. Glad that it was only a NIGHTMARE! :D

Just a couple of questions.
If and when M$ releases M$Defender will it be open source?
Will developers be able to peek behind the curtain and see if there are any back doors feeding info back to M$?

even worse than that Nightmare is:
Microsoft to forcibly install Bing search extension in Chrome for Office 365 ProPlus users
https://www.zdnet.com/article/microsoft ... RSSbaffb68
Microsoft will change the default search engine in Chrome from Google to Bing for its Office 365 ProPlus customers starting mid-February.
