Corona virus (COVID-19)

Post by Pjotr »

The nasty COVID-19 (Corona virus) is spreading around the world at high speed....

It's not the bubonic plague, but even if the mortality would be around 2 % (which remains to be seen, it might be higher), nobody likes to participate in a genetic tombola with a 1 in 50 chance that you'll die.

Are you in a stricken area? And if so, what precautions do you take?

To make a start: tonight became known that the first patient in The Netherlands has been hospitalized, in the Tilburg area, which is uncomfortably close to where I live. I must say that I'm not very keen on visiting Tilburg any more. :(

Here in Canada I believe our current infection level is 15 across the country. Four of those are in Ontario, the Province where I live. I'm scheduled to fly to the UK in July but I'm not sure how that is going to pan out at this time.

If information from China can be believed (??) and my reading of it is correct, pretty much everyone who has died from a coronavirus infection suffered from preexisting serious health impairments, primarily heart disease and diabetes. The percentage of smokers is also very high in China. For otherwise healthy people COVID-19 does not appear to be life threatening. But the database is pretty small...

Meanwhile, influenza is killing over 200 people a day just in the USA, and the media are largely ignoring that fact.

I have a holiday planned in France at the end of May, which is when I guess the virus is likely to be widespread in western Europe. It won't stop me going, but it took quite a bit of hunting yesterday to get cancellation insurance should the British Foreign Office recommend an end to non-essential travel as a result of the virus. Some insurers would not provide me with cover for that eventuality.

We have 3 reported in our state at the moment. I may be a carrier and do not know it. We were in the RAH yesterday and then had to find a particular doctor for an enquiry. We went to an area where we would normally find him and it was closed (this was not a regular appointment, so, not surprising). On walking around the area we asked the first person we found who said, "This is the infectious diseases clinic.............." :D I did think of a smart quip, but held my tongue.

Seriously, I think we will be ok as it was only the clinic. The ward is tucked away in another area of the Hospital.

I'm due to go to Hong Kong on Sunday and I'm in two minds about cancelling. The hotel is non-refundable and I'll only get the taxes and surcharges for the flight refunded! It would be my second financial loss this month! We were due to go to Cambodia at the beginning of this month but the onward flight from Hong Kong was cancelled so we cancelled the whole gig!

Folks are being urged not to socialise and companies are asking visitors to stay away from their offices. Schools have just been closed until after the spring break.

I run a craft beer bar and I can see myself going out of business if people don't come out to drink. I'm disinfecting everything metallic, door handles, toilet flush handle, taps and wooden surfaces.

So far there are 214 cases and 705 aboard a cruise ship. We've been overtaken in numbers by Iran, Italy and South Korea. Who knows what the figures are in North Korea!

Latest stats are here:

Down here in New Zealand we haven't had any reported cases, but it's just a matter of time. We've stopped all flights from mainland China from arriving, which has upset some people but I'm in the "better safe than sorry" camp.

Every winter a huge hubbub about some mysterious flue that is going to get us... Good business for newspapers, mask manufacturers, for averting attention from the state deficit or facts that really matter like
According to the World Health Organization, road traffic injuries caused an estimated 1.35 million deaths worldwide in the year 2016.[2]
That is, one person is killed every 25 seconds.

The main reason I booked a Hong Kong trip was that the "boss" was supposed to go to Saigon on Sunday but her friend has diabetes and didn't want to chance it. I just didn't feel like hanging around here on my own for three days! I don't feel happy flying out and leaving her alone!

I'm in Oklahoma, dead center of the USA lower 48 states....

even so, we have 1 reported case in Oklahoma City, in hospital quarantine.

the world is dependent upon travel for business, and there now, is no such place as immune from any disease.

as virulent as this new one is, it is going to take a while for WHO and CDC to come up with an antidote for it.

I haven't yet heard of any reported cases here in Florida, but as this is a massively popular tourist destination around the world, it wouldn't surprise me if cases were to pop up here.

It's anybody's guess at this point if the US is truly prepared to deal with this thing. Or, indeed, any widespread health crisis, given how badly the CDC has been financially gutted by the current presidential administration. Trust in the CDC is being further eroded, frankly, by the gag order placed upon it not to speak to the public without first getting whatever message they want to communicate approved by the White House.

Yes, the best we can get relatively quickly is probably a medicine that alleviates the effects of COVID-19 on the patient. Apparently an old malaria medicine, chloroquine, can do that. Still requires a bit more testing, though, and then production needs to be scaled up. So it won't be available next week, so to speak.

Anyway: if you haven't done so yet, I advise to buy some medical grade mouth-caps and bottles of disinfecting hand gel. Both are already impossible to get where I live....

the best protection we can do, is keep our hands clean, and try to avoid touching your face while out in public.

When my wife was in the hospital 3 years ago, a time period of six months, and me living there with her...
I kept surgical gloves in my pockets. Sadly, she passed away there, and not at home.

Her room was sanitized several times a day by staff, and myself every time I had to get up and touch something.
wore those gloves all thru the hospital and when finally outside, I threw them in the trash container....

Here in ROI we have no reported cases as yet, but only a matter of time I suspect. A Northern Ireland resident reported positive yesterday, having flown back from Italy to Dublin and then taken public transport (train) to the north. Make of that what you will.

In this household we're being cautious, hand washing after coming in and gels whilst out. Stocks of the latter are already running short in the shops, but no visible panic. High sense of awareness around though.

China apparently seem to be getting it under control, but I wonder if the west would be able to manage it in the same way. People like to do what they want to do, and I'm not sure governments would bring in the same, quite severe, restrictions as quickly as the Chinese.

There's quite a bit of talk online and elsewhere about the demographics of those at risk, age, preconditions etc (which I fall in to) but if it was to run riot I'm conscious that it would have other implications. A simple example could be something as innocuous as dentistry! You get a severe tooth-ache so are you going to go and see a guy who's going to stick his hand in your mouth, assuming he hasn't closed the clinic, having already treated a number of other patients that day. Sounds a bit spurious I know, but hey lateral thinking! Start extrapolating that thought across other areas, physiotherapists etc, and all of a sudden the effect crosses many boundaries.

Hopefully we won't get there and this thing will stay contained, but I am thoughtful about possible wider implications.

Being more serious than my previous, was at the dentist this morning. They normally get through a box of disposable face masks a day. Supplier has told them they can have three boxes for the week. They were wondering if they would have to close.

I looked at that map, and it does not seem to have been updated since the 1st day that it was released.
