Can't Install Windows 10 - Driving Me Mad

Post by vanbmaoc »

I don't even know if this is the right place to post but I am trying to install W10 along side LM.

I am too new to Linux to install along side my LM version so have been advised to just install W10 and then install a dual boot.

I have created a W10 bootable USB and it will not work at all, it's driving me mad.

When I choose boot menu the usb that I have for W10 is there, but when I select it it just boots into LM.

I have tried enabling uefi but can't find it in the uefi boot menu but it is there on the legacy. I got my laptop a while a go and it came with W10 installed but I just wiped it clean with LM as I didn't want W10 but now do need it.

I have a hp probook 4530s.

I would use a VM but my laptop only has a dual core and 6gb of ram so need it to be on bare metal if that is the right phrase?

I don't want to split a dual core with a resource heavy os like W10.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you need an installer, this works to make one: viewtopic.php?f=42&t=314678

And if that doesn't work try burning the win10 iso to a DVD and booting from that. I've used xfburn for this.

In general, Windows should always be installed first. In fact, I'm not aware of a case where it shouldn't. Just like with Mac OS X, it puts its own bootloader on your drive, which then (absent having to re-establish GRUB) eliminates the ability to boot into anything except Windows. Also, later versions of Windows have been known to periodically overwrite the bootloader (sometimes during updates) which then means booting into your favorite distro requires more hail-mary b***s****.

As a follow-up, on my own (new) system, which came with Win10, I never boot the computer with both drives connected at the same time. Either the SSD is connected and the M.2 is disconnected, or vice versa. It's a complete pain in the a**.

I've just had a nasty thought. (You know you're in trouble when I come up with these) Can't comment on M2 drives, I've only ever installed 1 on grandson's computer. However, could you make a "breakout box " for the power to said drives, run it to the outside of the case and just power up whichever drive you want?

I told you it was dangerous to let me near the internal workings. :D

Connector(s) for M.2 drives are already integrated on the mobo. Something tells me you'd need to interrupt more than just the power pins. Honestly, if I didn't have certain specific plans in mind which will require the use of Windows 10, I'd have already nuked-paved it and installed LM there.

it could, at least initially, run that win-10 in an VM, as there is 6Gb of memory available:
- - I've done that, on PCs with less available resources .. it really does depend, on what you need win-10 for.

Check on your pc's manufacturer's web site if it has something like this, it's for my dell laptop.
https://topics-cdn.dell.com/pdf/dell-su ... _en-us.pdf
Maybe there is something like it for your hp probook 4530s.
I had to install a working version of Win10 in Virtual Box,
https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... albox.html
In order to download the OS Recovery Tool for my laptop.
It requires windows to download it, no way to do so from LM.
Warning! If there is a recovery tool and you use it, it will probably wipe everything out on your pc!
Back everything up!
After reinstall of win10 then you can use LM iso usb to install LM using the along side option.
If your query has been resolved, edit your first post and add [SOLVED] to the subject line.
If you found a solution on your own please post it.

If you want a bootable USB stick with windows 10 you need on Linux woeusb
https://github.com/slacka/WoeUSB
If you have acces to a windows computer you need the windows media creation tool or Rufus
https://rufus.ie/

Maybe there are more, but these I know that they work

I just tested WoeUSB with the latest commit and it worked. They fixed it. It wasn't working earlier this year. If you want to try it, don't get it from github. Get the .deb version for Ubuntu here: https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2017/06/cre ... usb-ubuntu
Use NTFS and not FAT32 for the file system.

Why not from github, version numbers are the same.
Btw, I made a HirensCD (based on win10) on USB with fat, that worked perfectly

Why not from github, version numbers are the same.
Because the link I provided has the .deb which, for a beginner, is just click and install.

For some reason, using the link you provided, I can't find the deb file. https://github.com/slacka/WoeUSB

Yes, but going to that link, there is no .deb file that I can see. The link I provided, is direct to the .deb file maintained by them.
