I can't remember, it was in the days when 33.6 kbit/s modems were the fastest you could get but I remember installing a 28 kbit/s internal PCI modem to the Packard Bell we had. I still have a US Robotics 56 kbit/s modem in the cupboard which would still work fine. I may recycle it, I don't believe for one minute it's worth anything on eBay since it's a later USB one.

I’ll tell you a DNS joke but be advised, it could take up to 24 hours for everyone to get it.

Re: The first website you visited
I don't remember the first web site I ever saw. I used AOL for a few days in about 1993 so I could find a real ISP so it was probably whatever AOL had for a start page. I do remember AltaVista was the only good search engine back then.

I don't remember the first ISP we used but one was LineOne which if I recall correctly changed ownership twice and eventually got bought out by Tiscali. There was a data compression service for dial-up which did actually make browsing web pages noticeably faster called onspeed. The compression was applied to most things including shockwave and flash objects but not video and audio and you could control the level of it.
Google Chrome for Android and other competing Android browsers offer similar techniques presumably for saving mobile data.

Don't actually remember if it was the first one but near the top would have been Microsoft, Windows support page.
Re: The first website you visited
The first one I remember was Nasa. I viewed some fantastic images in the mid 90s.

I first accessed the WWW in 1995, by means of Compuserve. So probably:

onramp.net
- 1994. OnRamp Technologies was one of the first, if not the first ISPs in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Running OS/2 on a Gateway 486SX with 64MB RAM (that is an M, kiddies), a SupraFAXModem 1440, and using a TCP/IP dial-up script I helped to write. I think it was to set up email accounts.Altavista
was my first search engine, too. Forever may there be a plague on the house of yahoo! for what it did you ye.I do not share PCMag's fond memories of AOL's entry to the internet. The only thing I remember is the Eternal September and the "Me, too" AOLers making a mess in/of UseNet.

Re: The first website you visited
my first one, was a bulletin board that I wrote, and was purchased by the State of NM, Univerisity, Albuquerque.
it ran on a 300 baud modem with a reel to reel tape recorder to save the program.
after that, came CompuServe a year or so later.

It was either Yahoo or Lycos.

If you're looking for a greener Linux pasture, you won't find any that is greener than Linux Mint. ;)

Re: The first website you visited
Very likely it was the default page set up with whatever happened to be the web browser I was playing with that particular day. It's been so long ago that maybe I'll have to call up the NSA and ask them.

Something NSFW probably. I dunno, I don't remember.
Re: The first website you visited
I can't remember back that far... but it was with a TRS-80 Model 1 with a 300 baud modem. Altavista and Hotbot were the main web search engines.
Using Mint as primary OS since 2006.
Re: The first website you visited
On the internet as we know it, it was "The Cat's Meow" homebrew recipe page, in 1991. It was text only, accessed via Gopher on a Unix machine at work. My first GUI logon was probably Yahoo in 1994-1995.
Also used the old DARPANET in college in 1980-1985 to look up chemical safety information (CAS).
p.s. Don't assume I know much from the above info. The only thing I really learned about computers in college was a deep hatred of FORTRAN.
