Where can I find a Media Center/deskop?

Post by FlowerChild » Wed Sep 23, 2009 6:59 am

Hi
I am looking for something in between a Media Center and a standard Linux desktop.

A simple interface with large icons, with browser, media playback, but operated by keyboard & mouse, not remote.

Anyone ever heard of something like that?
Every OS wastes your time, from the desktop to the lap,
Everything since the abacus, is just a bunch of crap.

From Microsoft, to Macintosh, to lih-lie-lih-lie... nux.
Every computer crashes, 'cause every OS sucks.

Perhaps the media centers such as Elisa, XBMC, or Moovida?

See thats it, I'm looking for something other than that.

It might just be a way to skin a desktop so it's usable fits a 30"+ TV.

A "Media Center"-ish desktop or theme.

Does it make any sense?

Edit:
XBMC and Moovidia lacks a browser as well.
Every OS wastes your time, from the desktop to the lap,
Everything since the abacus, is just a bunch of crap.

Have you tried mythbuntu? It starts off as a media centre, but you can add an ordinary desktop to it too. Or you could just use mint and set the theme to use ginormous icons.
If you have a question that has been answered and solved, then please edit your original post and put a [SOLVED] at the end of your subject header
Hint - use a google search including the search term site:forums.linuxmint.com

well, I wanted to install xbmc, and, after the whole usual trial-and-error process and a lot of rummaging through various forums, I succeeded.

except that it was REALLY sluggish. I mean, the letters of the usual anti-piracy warning you get when playing a DVD appeared one at a time, every 2 seconds !!!

I tried Moovida instead (install process far quieter by the way), and with exactly the same result: exceptional sluggishness... :(

I have Gloria on a Amilo laptop (fujitsu-siemens make) with a core 2 duo CPU, lots of DDRII RAM and hard drive space, so that's probably not the issue...

Please help! Thanks.
