Windows [baa] [quack] [moo] 10 has inflicted its last ignominy on my Linux

Post by Moonstone Man »

I've been able to get down to 99.9999999999999% Windows free and have set up a Windows VM just so I can update my car GPS every once in a year or three. I had been planning over the coming weekend to take a few minutes to rip out the SSDs that contain Windows on my main and my spare machines. I had a Linux security update done and rebooted. Somehow, Windows booted. I may have accidentaly hit the keyboard in Grub, but that's unlikely because it would require several down arrow key presses and a hit on enter, so I have no idea why or how Windows booted. Perhaps I had booted into Windows to grab a copy of the GPS software earlier in the day. So, I waited a few seconds for Windows to get to the desktop and rebooted again.

And again, up came Windows 10, so I shut down and cold booted, and again, up came Windows 10, so I scratches me bonce and figured to boot into UEFI/BIOS, and lo and behold, Windows 10 had rearranged my explicit boot order /and/ the BBS priorities. It had moved itself from last boot position to first.

Needless to say, the Windows SSDs were ripped out immediately. Good riddance, I say.

YUP - - that does indeed happen - -

the Windows Updates will < sometimes > overwrite any other file system,
and up to, and including the file system, from an Linux System.
it will even overwrite the Grub Boot Loader, on many instances . . .

is your car GPS an inbuilt model
or an external / portable device :?:

aren't the latest portable GPS devices . . now with WiFi to update them ?.
or, was that with Bluetooth , maybe ?.

Per Pierre

"" the Windows Updates will < sometimes > overwrite any other file system,

And this is yet one of the many dozens of reason why every time I read about someone dual booting Windows and a Linux distro from the same storage drive it makes me sick and sad at the same time.

It is always wiser to keep these two operating system worlds on separate storage drives and only boot from one at a time while the other is completely disconnected.

Yeah - - it messed up my HP G6 Laptop, that was an Win / Lin dual_boot scenario . .
& that worked really well, for over an year.

now, if you just Turn it On . . it boots straight into the Win-10 system
else you do have to press the F9 key, first, to find there is actually an LinuxMint System, as well.

the thing is, that on my Lenovo Desktop, the dual_boot works just fine . .
- coz that is an BIOS based ms-dos partition system 8)
the win-10 on that, doesn't seem to affect the partitioning of that machine.

Yes, but my operating systems are isolated from one another so I rely on the boot key to explicitly select the boot device when I don't want to boot into Mint. Each OS has its own bootloader and each has its own partitions on its own drive so as to avoid this type of issue. I can only suppose that Microsoft with its Windows is not as Linux friendly as it claims. The worst of it is that it is my machine, not theirs, yet they modified its UEFI/BIOS to suit themselves without even a peep out of them to ask if it was ok, which it wasn't.

It has a SIM in it for traffic reports but that's it. It's portable, and probably only 2 or 3 years old.
