Large Outdoor Boxes on Native American reservations...

Post by Portreve »

I'm wondering if anyone here might know this...

There is a kind of wooden box, approximately 4' × 4' × 4' (~ 1,2m × 1,2m × 1,2m), made of 2×4 wood planks, with a wooden front door, and it sits on legs of about 2' (~0,6m). They are located next to the driveway, at the front of an individual's private property.

I've only ever seen this kind of thing on Reservation land, and I'm wondering what exactly they are for.

Sometimes, you'll see a double version of this.

Does anybody have a clue what these are?

I used to live in an area surrounded by (3) reservations and never noticed what you're describing. Can you post a pic?

Blessing ( or Community Pantry ) Box?

Usually has some sort of sign attached that reads something like "take what you need - bring what you can".

Not a Native American thing. It's a poverty thing.

The next time I'm passing through that or a similar area, I will. I tried searching for a photo on Google, or a discussion, or anything, really, but came up empty.

I think I'll try my hand at drawing one. I'm able to be roughly ok-ish at technical drawings.

Is this too small for what you are talking about:

It doesn't look anything like that. Tomorrow when I get home from work, I'll try my hand at drawing something.

Try posting a Google Maps link. Its streetview should show things.

I couldn't get a Google Maps link that would work. Something tells me they don't have addresses which are publicly recognized.

Anyhow, I did the next best thing, finding two of them using Street View and I combined two screen shots to try and illustrate what I'm talking about.

Aside from the one on the right having been painted, they are mechanically identical.

P.S.: Anyone wishing to can go to Reservation Road NE, Okeechobee, Florida. You should be able to navigate up and down that road to your heart's content.

I don't know but might they simply be parcel delivery boxes?

<joke>It's where they keep the head of the last person that asked what's in it</joke>
I’ll tell you a DNS joke but be advised, it could take up to 24 hours for everyone to get it.

Just speculation, but maybe has to do with the food distribution program? If the food distribution program delivers - the boxes would keep the critters out until the individual picked up the groceries.
