From a user perspective I must agree. But from an advertisers perspective and unobtrusive ad is ineffective. Unless people notice your ad, what good is it to you? I don’t think advertiser mind if they turn off most folks as long as potential customers notice them.

There's an old saw, or an old joke, or whatever, from the print industry that an ideal magazine from the Advertising Department would be one with nothing but ads in it and just a bit of content, and from the perspective of the Editorial Department, there should just be a few ads and the rest should be content.

The happy medium is somewhere in between.
