Re: How: Install Windows 10
Welcome to the forums.
Either you should install Windows 10 first, then install Mint, or,
you can install Windows on a in a Virtual Machine which means that you'd be booting into Mint, then can open Windows within Linux.
You won't be able to do that if your computer hasn't got a 'good' spec without it stuttering.
'Good' depends on what you are trying to run.
Another way of phrasing this might be, what applications do you need to run in Windows? Maybe there is a suitable Linux equivalent which would save you a whole load of system resources.

Re: How: Install Windows 10
From a VERY brief foray that I had with a new laptop that I purchased with Win 10 on it I had the following experience.
I booted up with a LM image on a USB stick and it installed fine.
But come the next time I rebooted Win 10 then complained, something about the disk space being incorrect.
It appears that you have to use an MS tool to repartition the disk, and that tool told Windows what disk space it had, so that it wouldn't
complain and assume a disk reporting error. You couldn't just get away with Linux partitioning tools, as they didn't "inform" Windows of the
disk space change.
But frankly I just couldn't be bothered with Windows anyway and just trashed the disk and made LM the sole owner.
That was the last I ever saw of Win 10, all 24 hours of it and I've never used W10 since.
Also, Windows has a habit of overwriting GRUB files and ruining everything, it's nasty and as such I wouldn't recommend dual boot.
Others might have better experiences or knowledge.

I seem to recall the Windows disk management procedure was this
https://www.hellotech.com/guide/for/how ... windows-10
Even after that, I still don't trust Windows not to overwrite Linux files so good luck.
As an aside, the final nail in the coffin for me was the ftdigate scandal, nuff said !

Nope - - Not Usually the case .. any Windows Update can often mess up your careful dual_boot system, punkbiscuit wrote: ⤴Wed Jun 23, 2021 5:01 am

Re: How: Install Windows 10
I've have (2) 2010 Dell Optiplex 380 desktops and dual boot Windows 10 and PCLinuxOS and have never had a Windows 10 update ruin or wreck my dual boot set up or cause any problems.
I installed Windows 10 on its own hard drive and when completed I completely disconnected the Windows hard drive.
I installed PCLinuxOS on its own hard drive and when completed I then reinstalled the Windows 10 hard drive and powered up the computer and a boot menu displays and I have a choice to boot Windows 10 or PCLinuxOS.
Windows 10 installed on its own hard drive.
PCLinuxOS installed on its own hard drive.
These desktops don't have the UEFI/Secure boot bios that newfangled computers have and don't know if this type of dual boot set up will work on them.

Last year we said, 'Things can't go on like this', and they didn't, they got worse.

Yep, I can vouch for that one.Windows 10 installed on its own hard drive.
PCLinuxOS installed on its own hard drive.
I did the same when working for an ex employer, two separate disks, one for each OS and never had issues.

Re: How: Install Windows 10
I bought and installed a 1TB Western Digital NVME M.2 drive and then, using an HP-provided Microsoft flash drive for installing Windows 10 Home, did just that.
Windows 10 now being installed, I used Disk Management to shrink the main partition such that I had 500GB freed up, at which point I then set up LM 20.1. W10 has since had any of a variety of updates applied, and everything is running just fine.

Re: How: Install Windows 10
ALWAYS instal Windows into a virtual box or install it first, then install Linux as dual boot. Why would you bother!

the main issues, do seem to occur when Installing in EFI / GPT mode,
and onto the same drive, for both systems.
if you can avoid using either method, then there is an higher success rate . .
