I watch all kinds of things when I need a brain break. At the moment I'm watching a documentary about a 350 litre, V20, 4 x water-cooled turbo Rolls Royce diesel engine built in Germany that produces 10 MW of power while sculling 2300 litres of fuel an hour. I want four for my car.

And I thought the worst was the guy who built a car around a V12 merlin and called it a RR. For some funny reason he kept burning out the clutch.

I wanted one for my retro-cruiser motorbike but I figured I wouldn't be able get my legs over it and on to the foot pegs.

Great singer. Pity he's almost mortally obese, though....

One wonders: if he would ever succeed in losing that immense unhealthy weight load, would that negatively affect his voice?

I find it shameful that you would even bring up a person's weight, to be perfectly honest. So what if someone is big.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30154161/
https://www.thelancet.com/pdfs/journals ... 0200-0.pdf
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7230065.stm

The key word there is genetics, so it clearly is not as if people with obesity can "succeed in losing that immense unhealthy weight load" by some action of their own, nor is that they gained "that immense unhealthy weight load" by some action of their own either.

No shame involved. Nor blame. Just a purely factual remark: that guy is almost mortally obese. Obviously he urgently needs medical help in losing that life-threatening amount of weight.

Would a loss of weight reduce the great singing quality of his voice? If so, that would probably be a diabolical dilemma for him.

Arh yes, I remember the Rolls Royce with the Merlin engine back in the days when it happened. It seemed a good use for the odd Merlin lying around. Now New Zealand needs them because this is the country that builds Mosquito fighter bombers.

Body weight does indeed influence singing voice quality:
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24408481/

A research done with women, but there's no reason to assume that it would be different for men.

Some interesting things to read in this article as well:
https://www.choirplace.com/blogs/3639/1 ... eight-loss

Reading that article, the wonderful and superb light tenor voice of the late Luciano Pavarotti might well have been partly due to his huge weight problem....

Which poses a dilemma that's perhaps partly comparable to top athletes in certain sports: the amount and the intensity of the training they do, is definitely unhealthy. But without it, they wouldn't be able to achieve their peak performance.

But it's of course easier to stop with top-level sport than to lose weight, even with medical assistance. So the comparison is only partially valid.

That's absurd. Obese is only an adjective like short, blind, blond, clever. If you feel shame, or take offence where none is intended, then you are the one with a problem.

Wow.

Certain four letter words are just adjectives, verbs or nouns. Try using them in your reply and see how far you get with using that statement for an excuse.

Either you see things that aren't there or you don't know the meaning of the word shameful in the context it was used. Lookup scandalous and improper.

The v20 engines are a bit bigger than a fighter-plane:

So the Merlin was good and the Griffin bigger but what about the Crecy? The biggest piston engine ever built. It could have been 5000 hp. So? The jet engine turned up. Six Crecys were built.

It also includes how a sleeve valve engine works - also very noisey (8:40) !!! It set off sirens 15 miles away.
