[Solved] SSD stopped working

Post by RollyShed »

After loading a Linux Mint system to a new SSD for one of our Shed members, data from a couple of other disks, belonging to the about to be owner, was loaded via USB connection to the spare disks. The problem appeared to be over filling the SSD with the installed system, which made it rather unhappy i.e. DEAD.

Trying to boot the computer via an iso USB got nowhere, simply wouldn't show anything on the screen unless the offending disk was removed.

Desperation.... OK, have dinner and think about it.

Fix - connecting a SATA - USB cable to the "dead" disk and checking it on the main computer and it showed up. A good start. Next delete a chunk of data. Yes, a bit happier. Plug it into the computer it was originally installed on and something that could not be done before, put the Trash Can on the desktop. Open it and delete the trash. An even happier disk and the whole system back to where it was before over doing things.

Basically "CPR" for SSDs.

For those who don't know, CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) is what you do on a drowning person or with a heart attack.

Just to add to the story, the laptop it was to go in used a 2.5" SSD according to Crucial. According to YouTube "How to pull it apart", that and/or an M2 "disk". So, having pulled the Acer 515-52-51YD apart (crowbar), there is the place for a standard 2.5" disk but no cable. WHAT!!! Only an 256GB, M2 fitted.

Bangs head on table.....

For those who don't know, an M2 is smaller than a bit of memory. You'd miss seeing it if you didn't know.
