The Wife didn't like any Linux distros until she tried PopOS and now she is learn Linux using PopOS.

I'm still in shock. :o :D 8)

If I'd have known that PopOS would be the distro to strike her fancy I'd have installed it awhile back.

Guess ya never know what someone will take to no matter how long you've been around them.
She has seen all of them. I tried with eye candy, I tried Manjaro KDE, Manjaro Cinnamon, Fedora Cinnamon, Mint Cinnamon, POP!_OS Gnome and KDE, nothing. She is in love with Redmond... Perhaps Garuda?

I have given away three laptops to friends who really needed them, all with POP!_OS on it, and no one has complained, ever.
You can't please some people no matter what you do so just tell them the only tech support you be providing from now on will be for Linux and if they don't like it, they can pay for outside tech support themselves. You might wind up sleeping on the couch for a week or few but they will eventually come around.

If I didn't fix or repair the Wife's computer if it failed she would just go out and buy a new computer.

I would get ordered to fix it or get her a new one.

And what would happen if you did neither (besides sleeping on the couch for a while)?

It's all about "positioning" and "marketing" and "spin".
When my wife's Win7 machine crashed, I got her a refurb with Win7. (Didn't give it to her when I bought it right away).
At the time Win7 became EOL, but she really hates change. I upgraded it to Win10 (since Win7 was EOL and I develop Win software) so I told the that the laptop didn't support Win7. To be fair, I couldn't get her to move to LibreOffice, even though she hated the Office ribbon.

This maybe? https://www.etsy.com/listing/1250647551 ... _purchases I have one riding on the dash of my F150 Screw. I stuck his little butt onto some Velcro hook tape stuck to the dash so he doesn't wander around.

MurphCID wrote: Fri Jul 01, 2022 10:15 am I have decided as part of my retirement, I am going to get an inexpensive used laptop and put Linux on it and give it to my oldest daughter to play with. Best Buy has some pretty decent prices on older business grade laptops that I can get. Other than Linux Mint-Cinnamon, what would be a good beginner distro that looks decent and works pretty well on older hardware so that she can play around? I was thinking POP OS or MX Linux. Possibly this one: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-refurbi ... Id=6445050 Or this one: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-elitebo ... Id=6458021 She likes the 13-14" size laptops. But it has to LOOK nice, and be able to be modded and themed.

Suggestions?
Don't buy anything with Nvidia graphics on it, if you don't plan to install Windows on it that is!
Debian 12 Gnome on a MSI H61M-P25 (B3) PC & on a Dell Latitude E6410 & HP EliteBook 8540p Laptops.
LMDE 6 on a Panasonic ToughBook CF-C1 Laptop.
Bodhi Linux 7 on a HP Compaq DC5750 Small Form Factor PC.
Windows 11 on a Intel DH55TC PC.

Agree!

my sister's Win11 machine refused to let her log in while I was helping her in Utah last summer.
asked if it matters what is behind the screen, she only watches YouTube and her email.

She has always screamed at me for suggesting Linux.....

I stuck in a LM21 Cinnamon Live Session USB Stick, and let her use it for 3 or 4 days....
then I asked, " well, it refuses to let us repair windows, but I can make it work just like this in about 15 minutes"

she said "okay"

that was in July, and I have only heard one complaint...

Man how things change. In 2006 I intentionally bought an Nvidia card for Compiz effects (I loved me some wobbly windows) since Intel support was lagging.

I put in the Hardware Support, Graphics Cards & Monitors, a bit about that -
viewtopic.php?f=59&t=385110

I tried a desktop with everything twice as good as the one I'd been using and it kept freezing. Another with about the same specs as the one I had been using, freezing. Both were fixed by removing the Nvidia card.

It is such a shame that Nvidia does this. At least AMD is Linux friendly.
