Well, I guess here in good old Europe, the term football is all right and what we call it. So we have got football and American football here on the old continent.

Only true in the USA. - Here in Europe it is and always will be football. Ask the British. They were the first to play it. So they have to know. And they decided to call it football.
And this is its anthem: Football's Coming Home (very British  )

Well we have two forms of football: soccer and rugby. But you're right, football is now the more common term for the popular version. Personally I have no interest in soccer, and only a passing interest in rugby. Cricket though is an entirely different matter, being both civilised and sporting.

I'm with Gary Lineker.... Football is a simple game; 22 men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans win.

As a bonus, one of my own favourite sayings: what's so interesting about watching 22 millionaires chasing a ball?

You'd think they're rich enough so they can each afford a ball of their own...

I heard it described years ago as something like "22 fools kicking a bladder up and down a field to no purpose".

Well, they get considerably richer in the process, so for them personally there's an understandable incentive.

The only thing I like about football is the healthy innocent nationalism attached to it. That's fun, and can help to bind a divided nation together....

nothing against football (soccer or whatever) - but not very fond of those arab regimes etc buying championships to boost their image, and the corrupt FIFA that let them du that

The biggest problem with the U.S. winning (I don't know if we're still in the running for that) is most of the U.S. will neither know nor care that anything happened.

Hi Portreve.

THE ORANGES FIGHT BACK!

Yes, for once it’s true, this time the Oranges squashed the Americans.

OK, I’ll get my coat?

I don't really understand what that means, but it doesn't sound good.

I hope neither of you are expecting me to have a clue?

However.

Them there Netherlanders usually wear Orange coloured kit. Deep breath - Oranges often get squashed to make Orange juice or processed to make Orange Squash; to me it was a play on words that I thought was amusing after the Netherlands scored three tries, no ... runs?, no .... goals - yep, goals - compared to the Americans one.

Do you want to know something?

I may have been wrong about it being amusing.

Not for the first time.

Probably not for the last time.

This time - I'm wearing my coat - and shame - OH, the shame.

Meanwhile - in real sport - I've a feeling that Pakistan may well trounce we English in tomorrows play.

Well, I'm Dutch, and I find it funny. Nice find; I hadn't heard that particular wordplay before.
