It seems no one noticed this or I missed the response? If I am correct it is spoken by John Wayne but I don't recall the movie.

I missed it the first time around. The movie is The Shootist, John Wayne's last movie, and the line is also from Wayne. It was one of a handful of movies in which Wayne dies on screen. A few others are The Cowboys, The Alamo, The Fighting Seabees , and The Sands of Iwo Jima.

it is john wayne from the last movie he ever made, the shootist, in 1976...he portrayed an aged gunfighter dying of cancer (he knew in real life that he was also dying of cancer so this movie was quite personal to him), he really was trying to just play himself in this movie and it was probably one of his best...it is of note that ron howard along with lauren becall were his co-stars...so yep, you guys did well answering correctly...DAMIEN

@Portreve and #3.
The Black Hole

For me, the "basic types" scene is one of the more memorable from a movie that is best forgotten. The "B" character is V.I.N.CENT, the ship's robot. Alas, you left out the next line in the scene. "Well, do us all a favor, V.I.N.CENT, and try to be a Can't...."

Here is my contribution. What's the movie?
"The only reason for time is so that everything doesn't happen all at once."

Nailed it!

So, a quick little bit of personal history here.

The very first movie I ever saw was the original Star Wars. This, incidentally, would have been before it had was subsequently retitled "Episode IV".

The next two movies I saw (therefore, #s two and three I'd ever seen) were Star Trek: The Motion Picture and The Black Hole. As I was a little child at the time, and we never bothered to keep the stubs of movie tickets, I have no idea which was #2 and which #3. They both came out at nearly the same time, with Trek debuting on December 8, and TBH on December 21, of 1979.

I've always liked the premise of The Black Hole and there are specific story elements from it that I liked. V.I.N.CENT and Old B.O.B. were and still are favorites; often, I think they really steal the scene. That said, they had some talent in that movie. Obviously, with today's standards of realism, it's easy to see many of the plot holes, but the movie was good, exciting entertainment.

I also paid money to see The Black Hole, and my first impressions were 'neat special effects' and 'this is rip-off of Verne's The Mysterious Island'. I thought Dr. Reinhardt is Capt. Nemo, only with no sense of remorse.

Here's another one I think should be fairly easy for SciFi fans. That's the first hint.

"So I said to the customer: 'Did you trying turning it off then turning it back on again?'" (Anyone who has spent time on a help desk will probably have used that line before. )

"Just what do you think you're doing, Dave?"
"The best part of waking up, is Folgers in your cup!"

The sidekick in this turn of the century movie was mute.
He was the white guy portrayed as a well rounded companion to the star

@ CoffeeFiend - 2001: A Space Odyssey

@ All41 - that could be any "Jay and Silent Bob" movies.

No one has identified the movie that has this obscure line - "The only reason for time is so that everything doesn't happen all at once."

Time for another hint?

You win a cookie. Saved me the trouble of giving a hint - my next quote would have been "Laugha while you can, monkeyboy."

Ok, so since nobody seems to know the first movie I quote from, I'll (grudgingly) give you folks a first hint:

Code: Select all

A: “You gave as good as you got.”
B: “We're alive only because I knew something about these ships that he didn't.”
Here's a bit more dialog from that movie:

Code: Select all

A: “As a doctor, *you* of all people should appreciate the danger of re-opening old wounds.”
B: “Sorry.”

Hint
The sidekick in this turn of the century movie was mute.
He was the white guy portrayed as a well rounded companion to the lonely star
He was thrown off a cliff, but bounced back with a bloody face for most of the movie

This movie had a funny scene with this song:

Day-o, day-o
Daylight come and me wan' go home
Day, me say day, me say day, me say day
Me say day, me say day-o
Daylight come and me wan' go home...

The trick is in making the quote kind of just this side of random or off the wall. The kind of quote you have to really know the movie to know.
