I was told a while ago, that when you upload a video it automatically becomes property of the site.
what about downloading a video from youtube?
is that considered theft?
what about all the videos I see that are re-mixes of songs , or footage of stuff other people shot, if I use some of the other persons video in a part of my upload do need to get permission?

It's good practice to at least ask the original owner of the content to use it even if you don't need to. That way no misunderstandings can arise.
