I went into the local computer shop to buy a flash drive about ten days ago. We're not on a first name basis but they know me by sight. I mentioned to my wife that we'd probably need to upgrade our external HDD to a 2TB shortly. They said "Do it now". I only half believed them but bought it anyway.

Here's a statistic/fact you can use to benchmark the retail price(s) with:

I just bought a 3T USB Westerrn Digital MyBook Essentials external storage for $139.99 at Bestbuy on October 7th, 2011
Today's price is $169.99 (online lookup)

I just discovered this yesterday. I wanted to order a new 250GB 2.5 laptop drive. Last month they were about $45. Now they are starting at $90! And there is no way of knowing how long the shortage will last or when prices will come back down. It's just frustrating.
