xrandr giving odd results (mixing up DFP-4 and DPF-6?) not able to set resolution

I'm trying to set a custom modeline for my LG Electronics 31MU97. It worked for a while, then I connected my laptop to a different external display (an HP, which worked with the usual requirement of manually respecifying the output resolution on each wakeup), but never worked again. There are a few symptoms I haven't been able to find any solutions for so far:

If I run

:| The 31MU97 is detected on DP-4, but at 640x480, a bit underfrequency for a 4096x2160 monitor. So I get a modeline with

:? How did the mode get applied to DP-6?
Why didn't it get added to DP-4?

Perhaps DP-6 is the DiplayPort output, which supports 4096x2160@60 Hz. DP-4 may be the HDMI output, which only support a maximum of 4096x2160@24 Hz. Those are the specs from the monitor's user manual.

What is the output of xrandr --verbose and inxi -Fxz

DP-4 is a DP 1.2 port on the docking station that once drove the monitor successfully, it can handle the output bandwidth... if it elects to do so.

From the xrandr --verbose output, only the 640x480@60Hz mode was extracted from the LG's EDID, so there was a problem in reading the EDID. You will need to add the desired modeline to a custom xorg.conf file.

However, NVIDIA says the maximum resolution supported by the Quadro K2100M graphics card is 3840x2160 at 60 Hz.

Thanks again for your expert replies.

The Zbook 15 G2 supports 4096x2160 per HP's documentation (http://h20195.www2.hp.com/v2/getpdf.aspx/4aa5-2657enw), but more importantly, it did work quite well. Unfortunately, I connected my laptop to a lower resolution HP display and then back to the LG ultra resolution and the it stopped recognizing the LG.

The LG does have issues with EDID. From some references, this is common with 4096x2160 displays as not all drivers can parse the "extension block" (if this https://www.monitortests.com/forum/Thread-How-to-force-4096-x2160p-on-native-4k-tv-60hz is correct).

The thread-lead question is about why > xrandr --newmode ... / > xrandr --addmode DP-4 ... results in the mode being added to DP-6 instead of DP-4. It seems to be anomalous behavior. I am getting closer to resolving the problem that lead me to encounter this anomaly, I now have my LG at 3200x1800 resolution. Not sure why that is, but the xorg.conf at the risk of pivoting the thread topic, this xorg.conf at least gets past the scrambled EDID (not yet entirely sure why the preferred mode isn't being recognized, but will update when that's solved):

I don't know why that misconfiguration happened but I've seen that in two other topics I was involved in.

After doing that, did you try making any changes in Settings > Display? If you did, then the config file that stores the changes may be preventing the correct resolution on the LG. Open the File Manager and go to /home/your-user-name/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/ and rename the file displays.xml to displays.xml.old. Then open Settings > Display. Mark the checkbox next to Configure new displays when connected and click on Identify Displays. Check if the 4096x2160 mode is now listed.

There's some confusion here. Your ZBook has Optimus technology. See page 5 in this link:

So it has hybrid (dual Intel/Nvidia) graphics but the Intel integrated graphics is not listed in the inxi output. So the output DP-3 is the internal panel display. I usually see that listed as eDP in the xrandr output.

So with nvidia-prime installed, you can select either the Intel or Nvidia GPU to do the graphics rendering. But if the Nvidia GPU is selected, then there should be a specially configured xorg.conf file generated.
I originally thought you had connected the LG to the Nvidia card. So the DisplayPort is probably connected to the Intel GPU and your xorg.conf file should not work. Would you post the output of these two commands:

The NVIDIA control panel seems to be controlling the monitor as expected and the diagnostic output reflects the monitor. What I think I see is that the configuration in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/ controls xorg at boot, and by setting explicit positioning in the 10-monitor.conf file there, I get the right config at start, but the NVIDIA control panel writes to and seems to read from /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Thanks for the display test. I found something useful for the 31MU97 at http://penguindreams.org/blog/running-a ... 0-at-60hz/ (and some more detailed timing information at https://hardforum.com/threads/lg-31mu97 ... 1041970151)

The recommended modeline here is different that GTF or CVT returned:

The lspci | egrep -i "vga|3d" command does not show the Intel GPU. Is there a BIOS setting to disable it?

The cvt and gtftools were originally designed when only the bulky CRT monitors were in use. Most newer digital displays need to use a reduced blanking mode, which uses a lower pixel clock and timing values. This is done with the command
cvt -r. This only works for 60 Hz refresh rates or multiples of it.

Log out and back in. At the desktop, go to Settings > Display and check for the 4098x2160 resolution and make the change.

If that doesn't work, then open the xorg.conf file with the command gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and add this line to the Device section: Option "ModeDebug" "true". Log out and back in and post the Xorg.0.log file. Use this command to open it:

Press Ctrl+A to select the entire file contents. Right click on the screen and select “Copy”. Don't save it to a file. Open the Mint Forum reply window and select “Code” in the menu. Press Ctrl+V to paste the lines between the two code words.

If there is a startup problem and you can't get to the desktop, then reboot and select Recovery Mode at the GRUB boot menu. Yes, there's a bios setting for switchable graphics http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04070522. It seems I've done that.

I'm still getting 3200x1800 on both displays - the internal is correct, the LG still too low. Should I also have modified or deleted 10-monitor.conf at /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d?

(I'm giving removed 10-monitor.conf a try, will report if that helps. not sure where the validated metamodes would come from if not there the offsets are in 10-monitor.conf even if the modes don't seem to be exactly).

Results:
No 10-monitor.conf
Both monitors had a range of available resolutions from 320x240 to 2048x1536. No native resolutions available.

Copying the configuration you provided to 10-monitor.conf
DFP-3 worked fine, but the LG on DFP-4 only had 640x480 and 320x240 resolutions available.

It does appear from the logfile that the first Section "Screen" is informing x of available resolutions given the Modes "3200x1800 +448+2160" seems to be applied to both. I'll try taking that line out and removing the second "Screen" section and updating the modeline to the one you provided.

The settings in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file will override the settings in the /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf or any other configuration files, except the displays.xml file in /home/your-user-name/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/, so if any changes were recently made in Settings > Display, then the displays.xml file should be deleted. Also check that there is no setting enabled in Settings > Display to mirror the displays.

From looking at the log file, I noticed that you didn't use the xorg.conf file I had listed in my previous post to use. Also, the Xorg.0.log file you posted does not have all the additional mode debugging info it should have if you added Option "ModeDebug" "true" to the Device section of the xorg.conf file.

Weirdly the xorg.conf.d files do seem to be controlling. Adding c]Option "ModeDebug" "true"[/c] to 20-nvidia.conf in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/ gives the results you expected (and also explains why it isn't logging the file you gave me - which is definitely now the contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I'm not sure why /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/ is superseding but here's the log output

You are using 3 config files and only one is needed. To avoid confusion, especially for me or anyone else that may try to help, and overriding of settings, I suggest to only use the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to troubleshoot the display problem and use the one I posted because it has only the essential lines. You can rename the others. Some of the X Config options in your 3 files is either not read by the Nvidia driver, such as:

You're absolutely right, of course, but the existence of the 10-.. and 20-.. files was, at one time, successful. I'll clean it all up and start over. I did try this before posting by update/reinstalling the OS and working backward from /etc/X11/xorg.conf to the /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d directory. I didn't mess with it this time because I thought /etc/X11/xorg.conf would take precedence. Not sure why it doesn't.

- I configured the files at /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d after attempts with /etc/X11/xorg.conf didn't solve the problem. I had the display working with this configuration, but after connecting to another monitor (and disabling and then reenabling Option "DPMS" in an attempt to get the backlight to shut off when the computer isn't being used (still not working), and then connecting back to this LG monitor, the native resolution was no longer available.

- I also used to be able to use the built-in audio on the monitor as an output device. It no longer appears as an option.

- I'm pretty sure I got valid EDID information from the monitor when I first connected it. At the very least the OS generally recognized the name of the monitor. After being away for a while it stopped doing that. I suspect it felt abandoned and hurt that I'd used a different monitor and is sulking and refusing to answer questions.

- I tried mv'ing /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf and rebooting, but got no live monitor at all. I didn't try mv'ing /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf at the same time and will do so now. When i break X I get no live screen at all, neither does dropping into command line mode give valid output either, so I've been fixing those states by booting off an install USB key and editing the munged file back to the previous, mostly functional state. I highly recommend having a handy and tested bootable USB key for anyone trying to debug a wonky x config.

- I'm not sure why /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d is superseding /etc/X11/xorg.conf. The nvidia driver definitely edits /etc/X11/xorg.conf, but only by copying those changes to /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-moitor.conf have I been able to make any changes active. That may be true. After re-reading the posts and thinking everything over, I'm not totally certain about how the config files are being read and executed with your hybrid graphics system, where the laptop's internal display panel and probably the Thunderbolt connector is connected to the Intel GPU, while the DisplayPort connector could be hard-wired to the Intel or Nvidia GPU. So the Nvidia driver would not have full control of the display settings through the xorg.conf file and the X Server would be using the settings in 10-monitor and 20-nvidia.conf.

This important X Config option, Option "ModeValidation" "AllowNonEdidModes", is only read by the Nvidia driver. If it's placed in the 10-monitor file, then the X Server won't use it.

It's possible the LG monitor's EDID got corrupted or damaged. An article I read by a computer technician said:
"Hot-plugging and hot-swapping DVI / HDMI / DisplayPort is not safe. Before disconnecting any DVI / HDMI / DisplayPort cable from either its monitor’s head or graphics card’s head, first turn both the monitor and the computer off and unplug the wall electricity socket to both of them.
Since electrical surges are momentary spikes, a digital monitor’s EDID (data and/or checksum) could easily be wiped or damaged."

This is where Windows has a distinct advantage over Linux. The monitor's vendor includes an installation disk with the monitor containing .INF files, which include the EDID info, so the graphics driver preferably uses this data and does not have to extract the EDID info directly from the monitor, as in Linux. If that gets corrupted, the files can be obtained from the vendor's website.

As a last resort, I've read where a monitor can be shipped back to the vendor, to have the EEPROM chip reflashed with the corrected EDID.

Does your laptop have a dual-boot with Windows or do you have another Windows PC to connect the LG monitor?

While looking at the 10-monitor.conf file again in your 7th post, I missed an important error. You said this config enabled 3200x1800 on both displays. I have removed some of the unnecessary and commented lines, so reading the file will be easier. The two Screen sections had the same Identifier name, which is Screen0, but that needs to be different. So the second Screen section can be named Screen1. When there are two or more Screen sections, they also need to be listed in the ServerLayout section. However, there is only one Device name because only the Nvidia GPU is enabled. I also corrected the Modes line. So I don't know how this is going to work.

I'm really sorry for the delay in getting back to you - I very much appreciate your tireless support and help. I was submerged with some unexpected travel.

I had a chance to try the first option you provided. Results were a little odd.

At boot with the new 10-monitor.conf file, DFP-4 defaulted to 960x1200 resolution during startup and my internal/DFP-3 display wouldn't sync and was blank. After a few changes by forcing a restart to a bootable install USB key I realized (DOH) that just blindly typing my password into the invisible sign-in box resulted in the internal display syncing properly to 3200x1800. From there I could bring up the NVIDIA control panel and set DFP-4 to the allowed options, which still includes 3200x1800, but not 4096x2160.

Looking through it, is there a way to disable mode validation at startup? It isn't even checking the preferred mode.

It seems that at startup there's an empiracal test process that's happening and generating a mode configuration that is then being flagged as invalid, but is available anyway while the requested mode options are being ignored. :?:

I'm not sure why the 4096x2160 mode is not even listed again in the most recent log file, to show the reason it is not being used.

No but you can disable certain checks that are done. One is the maximum pixel clock check.

During X server initialization, the NVIDIA X driver builds a pool of valid modes for each display device. It gathers all possible modes from several sources:
The display device's EDID
The X server's built-in list
Any user-specified ModeLines in the X configuration file
The VESA standard modes

For every possible mode, the mode is run through mode validation. The mode timings are checked against things such as the valid HorizSync and VertRefresh ranges and the maximum pixelclock. Note that each individual stage of mode validation can be independently controlled through the "ModeValidation" X configuration option.

Test this xorg.conf file, which has the X Config options NoMaxPClkCheck and NoEdidMaxPClkCheck added to the ModeValidation line, so the maximum pixel clock won't be checked:

You never answered this question: Does your laptop have a dual-boot with Windows or do you have another Windows PC to connect the LG monitor?

I'm about to try the disabled modechecks option, but before I do (and perhaps forget again to answer during reboots): my windows machine was condemned to a virtualized existence within the Linux machine, so it has no access to the hardware. I actually have a third drive installed in the laptop, blank, waiting for windows for a few applications that don't perform well virtualized, but as a windows-centric desktop has faded into the past, so too has any urgency to give it a fully valid life.

In short... not at the moment. More test results soon.
