When you boot, and see the Grub menu, select the GRUB menu entry for Mint and press e to edit the entry's GRUB commands.
At the end of the line that starts with "linux" add this:

Code: Select all

radeon.dpm=1

Then press F10 to boot.
Mint 18.2 Cinnamon, Quad core AMD A8-3870 with Radeon HD Graphics 6550D, 8GB DDR3, Ralink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI
Linux Linx 2017
