Depends on your Mint release, which you don't specify ... you should post some more useful info, copy/paste this in to the terminal and copy/paste the text output here:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
Not sure about the audio but if you have Mint 18.x installed you should be using the open source video driver (radeon). And you likely are. There's no other driver for that card in 18.x because AMD dropped support for the closed video driver for ubuntu 16.04 and mint 18 and any other Linux distro that current.

If you have mint 17.3 you should be able to go to Driver Manager and install the closed driver (called fglrx).

Don't bother going to AMD's site for drivers. Catalyst in Linux has been out of support for some time.

Actually, though you may not want to hear this, if you have an AMD card that fglrx supports you'd be much better off with mint 17.3.

That wan't an inxi report and isn't very useful. Read my first post.

Also, you already have the radeon driver installed. There is no other video driver for that card in Mint 18 or any other Linux distro that's as new.

If I were using an AMD card that has proper closed driver support I would not touch mint 18 or its ubuntu 16.04 base with a 10 foot pole.

So what I'm going to suggest is that you back up your data and do a clean reinstall of Mint 17.3 so you can get a decent driver. And I don't have the patience for users who don't read posts anymore so I'm done here.

If i said some thing are done something then i,m sorry. I did read your post and had taken your suggestion in consideration. I am still learning mint and it,s consul codes or number.

I will rephrase my questing How do i get or where do get the open source driver. I am using linux mint 18 64 bit.

Here the info i request. And may i ask where i says my amd driver is installed because in driver manager it dose not show up. If their is now other way to work around and I have to go back then so be it.

Re: ATI drivers fix

Post by Hoser Rob »

You have the open source driver already (radeon). It's the only one available for your AMD card in Mint 18.x. There's another one called AMDGPU but that is only for newer AMD cards.

Open source drivers don't show up in Driver Manager, only closed proprietary binary ones. You don't have one showing in Driver Manager because there are no AMD closed drivers for Mint 18.x or any other newer distro. They dropped support for it because they're rewriting their whole Linux graphics stack. Still.

If you want a proprietary video driver ... and I would ... the only way would to be to back up your data and do a clean reinstall of Mint 17.3. No workarounds here AFAIK. If you had an AMD card older than the 5xx series I'd suggest leaving things the way they are because AMD doesn't support binary drivers for cards that old. But if I was still using AMD and it was new enough I wouldn't touch 18.x.
