AMD Graphics problems after upgrade to Mint 20 XFCE

Post by BurgerBob »

Hi. I have tried searching about this but not found anything that seems relevant, but honestly, I don't know what I'm even looking for...

My AMD laptop has been running Mint fine until I upgraded to Mint 20 XFCE yesterday. First thing I noticed was that the desktop was garbled, the only workaround I found was to disable the compositor. Then I found that 3D map view in Google Maps in Firefox was corrupted, I tried disabling graphics acceleration but that had no effect.

I can't include screenshots I have. I don't know how to do it.

XFCE?

Open the xfce settings manager. Not the one with icons. The other one with lines of text.

Go to the line that says xfwm4 and set the vblank option to "glx", not auto or xpresent.

Go and reactivate xfce with compositor and see if it fixes the isse after reboot.

Thanks, that fixed the compositor. But I'm still having problems with Firefox and some other programs I've noticed (slight glitching) since installing Mint 20.

Is your corruption present only in google earth? The desktop renders properly? Video plays without tearing? What if you completely full screen the video?

Did you check the box to unredirect fullscreen windows?

If none of that works, you have a few options. Try to upgrade AMD drivers, live without compositing, or try a different compositor like compton.

Normally xfwm4 is pretty robust on new AMD cards. I consider it the 2nd best Linux compositor behind Kwin.

The vblank option fixed the Xfce compositor - so that works now. (Yippie!)

As for other things, I still have the problem in Firefox when using Google Maps 3D globe view as per the screenshot. I also have noticed glitches in some other programs, Hugin for example, but I only installed that for one task then removed it. Other things -seem- ok, VLC and YouTube in Firefox are ok I think, I do use Blender a lot but I've not done much in it since I upgraded.

Addendum:
Just tried Celluloid, I don't normally use it, the system locked up!

I installed Epiphany to test Google Maps 3D and it had the same problems as Firefox. See attached screenshot.

Even if you de-activate all compositing does it resolve the artifacts?

You can also try installing Kodi since it's the best way to test vaapi/vdpau acceleration. Play back a few full screen HD video and see if it's software or hardware decoding.

Not an expert, I'm more of a gamer. Do these apps use OpenGL acceleration or 3d?

It may serve you to upgrade your Mesa stack to a development version.

I have an AMD CArrizo laptop I will try google earth on.

Honestly, I do not know. From what I found online, I assumed Google Earth was using WebGL, I went to a site with WebGL tests - they all worked fine. I assumed it was OpenGL, I did some tests with glxgears etc - they all run fine. So I have no idea, I cannot believe I am the only person with this issue - I'm also seeing similar problems with another AMD machine I have but I don't know where the problem even is to begin to figure it all out.
It may serve you to upgrade your Mesa stack to a development version.
I've no idea how to do that, last time I tried something remotely like tinkering with the graphics on an older machine, I ended up having to reinstall the system - I can't do that as I'm doing actual work on this machine.

Just read a fix from Arch users maybe you can try

Create a file in your home:

~/.config/environment.d/mesa.conf

Add the line

AMD_DEBUG=nodmacopyimage

See if that fixes it.

Alas no, but it did stop xfwm4 from running, which was fun LOL ;-)

OK, so I've tried that and it's made no difference, see the attached screenshot. I'm beat with this. Others MUST have this problem, they must have because I cannot be the only person on earth with two AMD systems with similar problems, one being a fresh install, something has changed with the graphics and/or kernel on the new version of Mint, but I'll be damned if I can figure it out.

Ok. I did a fresh install of Kubuntu 20.04, which has the same graphics stack as Mint 20 on my laptop which uses an AMD a12 APU. Everything renders fine in chrome, including google earth

So it's either firefox or the XFCE desktop.

Try using chrome to see if the problem is there.

If it's still there, boot from a Mint Cinnamon or Ubuntu live CD and see if the corruption is there.

I would note there may be significant differences between our CPUs, I'm using an Athlon 300U and Ryzen 3, both despite the 'Athlon' brandings are Zen architecture and have Vega graphics. The A12 is older and maybe better supported?

I am going to test some live USB drives now....

Addendum:
I did test Chrome and installed the Google Earth app from the Software Manager - all do have the same problem, as I expected.

Problem IS also present on Ubuntu 20.04 live USB
Problem IS also present on Mint 20 Cinnamon live USB
Problem NOT present on Mint 19 XFCE live USB

I think this HAS to be a change in the graphics stack and/or kernel.

I just got done removing the full AMDPRO driver on my Mint 20 XFCE system due to complete freezes and random reboots. The good news was I was able to install the full driver (never got past the headless/OpenCL install), but after that it was pure chaos.

I don't know how much that is related to the problems I'm having, I'm not getting freezes or reboots, nor am I using the AMDPRO driver - which is proprietary?
