AMD-GPU driver 22.10 installation for Blender

Post by pleasehelpmeplease »

Could Linux Mint PLEASE push whatever update is necessary just to get us to the 22.10 AMD driver? I use Blender as well and it's mandatory for "HIP" AMD gpu accelerated rendering. Is there an ETA of when we can expect a 22.10+ AMD driver or are you just going to stick with this until Linux Mint 22? I read the thread and I have seen the suggestions that I should use a different distro, but aside from this one little thing, Linux Mint has been the only distro that just works for me. I've always had problems with other distros.

This is a big deal.

"sudo apt-get install linux-oem-22.04"

I tried this and it updated my kernel to 5.17-something, but my AMD drivers still remained at jammy-updates,now 22.0.5-0ubuntu0.1 amd64. I rebooted and tried the update manager and it said I was up to date. Still stuck on old drivers even with an updated kernel. I used Timeshift just before updating the kernel, so I'm back on default Linux Mint 21. I really hope Linux Mint gives us newer AMD drivers

The AMD 22.10 driver is AMD's proprietary driver. Linux Mint has never supplied proprietary AMD drivers so I do not understand why you think Linux Mint should start supplying you with proprietary drivers.

AMD has the driver on their website so you have access to it. Have you contacted AMD to let them know their instructions are not working?

Apparently, AMD knows this is not working, but there is no timetable for getting it to work.

Please check through Support Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (Jammy Jellyfish) #1730 and ROCm fails to install from APT repository in 22.04 #1713 for discussion on the issue and possible workarounds you could try.

As with any changes of this nature, I suggest making a Timeshift snapshot prior to the change to make it easier to revert if the suggestion does not work.

Honestly, if your work depends on proprietary stuff that much, just use Windows. I'm not trying to be condescending or anything. Don't torture yourself, AMD/Nvidia/Intel don't really care much about Linux or bother "speeding things up" for Linux users. Just use what works!

Apparently Canonical offers Blender support, for money: https://canonical.com/blog/blender-supp ... -canonical I seriously doubt they could help with AMD's proprietary drivers though. They probably can't/won't do what AMD is not doing themselves.

Probably the best place to ask for hardware acceleration in Blender is their own community https://www.blender.org/support/

Will there ever be an open-source implementation of the 22.10 driver?

I do not know AMD's plans.

Part of the 22.10 driver is already open-source and you get that from the kernel. The ROCM and vulkan parts, however, are not available from the kernel.

I suggest checking on the Blender forum to see what others might be doing because this seems to be affecting many people. Maybe someone there has found a different/better workaround.

I tried to install AMD driver 22.10 on Linux Mint Una 20.3, but I think it won't work since it's based on Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS (Focal Fossa).

So then I tried to install AMD driver 22.10 on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, and that didn't work either! I assumed I was doing something wrong, but then I came across this thread:
https://community.amd.com/t5/drivers-so ... 62#M158140

Some of the posts in that thread suggest that the driver itself is broken, so I gave up. It looks like there's been some updates in that thread, though. Maybe some of that is helpful?

The driver version is not specific for a version of Ubuntu. There are different links for the different Ubuntu versions. You have to watch and make sure you are using the correct download link.

That's the link I used to find the bug links I posted earlier in this topic.

When I go here https://www.amd.com/en/support/linux-drivers it specifies "Radeon™ Software for Linux® installer version 22.20 for Ubuntu 20.04.5 HWE" and "Radeon™ Software for Linux® installer version 22.20 for Ubuntu 22.04 and 22.04.01".

I don't see a link for older Ubuntu versions and that's why I thought Ubuntu 22.04 would be the minimum. Also looks like I tried back when it was 22.10 and I didn't realize that now 22.20 is available -- maybe I should try again with 22.20.

Ubuntu 20.04.5 HWE is Ubuntu 20.04 with all the updates and the 5.15 kernel.

If you are running LM20.3 and your system is updated and has the 5.15 kernel then you have the equivalent of 20.04.5 HWE.
