Why install transitional package for nvidia-kernel-common-470? [Resolved]

Post by Amii_Leigh »

Just to uninstall it? Should I ignore this "update"?

I haven't installed it yet! I'd like to avoid potential problems with graphics card drivers.

"This is a transitional package for nvidia-kernel-common-470, and can be safely removed after the installation is complete."

So I'm wondering what is the point to installing it? Isn't installing it inviting an issue?

If you are seeing the update in Update Manager, that means you already have something installed on your computer which sees that package as a necessary update. If you want help with understanding this, please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click Copy, and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware. Without that information, none of us will have any idea why that package is being offered as an update.

Sorry to be so much trouble about this. I just didn't understand the necessity.

You did not post the information I requested. I asked for your System Information.

What you did post does not say anything about being a transitional package. It says it is an updated driver package.

Code: Select all

nvidia-graphics-drivers-470 (470.161.03-0ubuntu0.18.04.1) bionic; urgency=medium

  * New upstream release (LP: #1997087).

I would have to check to be sure, but I believe the Nvidia-470 driver is on the quarterly update schedule with regards to security and bug fix updates supplied by Nvidia.

Nvidia updates their drivers, but those files are not in packages which you can use on Linux Mint. The Canonical (Ubuntu) developers take the files from Nvidia and put them in packages so you can get updated drivers through the package management (.deb) system. The Driver Manager and Update Manager GUIs use the .deb package update system.

Please scroll back to the post where I asked for System Information. You will notice I gave specific directions to get that information. I typed:

"Please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click Copy, and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware."

If you prefer to use the terminal, please provide the output of inxi -Fxxxrz. What you posted does not have information about how Linux Mint sees your hardware.

Yes, thank you. That is very helpful.

My understanding of how Ubuntu creates the Nvidia driver packages is they have them set up so the latest version available is the one to which your system is updated. When a newer version comes out and, in essence, "replaces" the older version, they create what are known as transitional packages. The package transits from the older version to the newer version.

In your case, your system has a GPU which is still receiving support and updates from Nividia.

Code: Select all

Graphics:
Device-1: NVIDIA GP107 [GeForce GTX 1050] vendor: eVga.com. driver: nvidia
  v: 470.141.03 bus ID: 01:00.0 chip ID: 10de:1c81
  Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.19.6 driver: nvidia
  unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,nouveau,vesa resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050/PCIe/SSE2
  v: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 470.141.03 direct render: Yes
You currently have the Nvidia 470.141.03 driver installed and the update you received indicates it is the Nvidia 470.161.03 which is a newer version.

However, if you check the Nvidia website, your computer's GPU can use the latest 500 series drivers. The Nvidia-515 is available and in the near future the Nvidia-525 will also be available through Ubuntu's package management system.

You can stay with the Nvidia-470 series if you want, but most people prefer to use the latest drivers. They would use the "pass through" packages so they receive the newer driver versions through the update system.

There are some GPUs for which the Nvidia-470 is the last in the line and they can not use the 500 series drivers so the Nvidia-470 will continue to remain available in the package management system.

In the past, there was the Nvidia-440 driver which was replaced by the Nvidia-450 driver. When the Nvidia-450 came out, the Nvidia-440 was not longer needed because that driver was not the last one for any GPU model. Therefore the Nvidia-440 package became a pass-through to the Nvidia-450.

So pass-through packages are a bridge between the old and new when your system is able to use the newer one.

However, it appears you have an active PPA for graphics drivers? I do not know how that might relate to what you posted earlier. You really should only use one method for updating drivers and not mix using both a PPA and the package management system.

Code: Select all

So, in your opinion, I should disable/uninstall that PPA? I don't remember the reason I installed it in the first place.

It's my understanding people use that PPA to get the newest Nvidia drivers before they are released in Driver Manager/Update Manager. If you do not recall ever using it, then there is no reason to have it.
