Video driver for AMD Ryzen 5 5560U with AMD Radeon Graphics

Post by noloader »

Hi Everyone,

I purchased a new mini-pc for a family member.[1] The hardware is described as "AMD Ryzen™ 5 5560U Mobile Processors with AMD Radeon™ Graphics." I used Clonezilla to copy the drive from old machine to new machine. Both machines (old and new) are Mint 20.3, fully patched. Everything seems to be Ok except for the video drivers. I'm getting the dreaded "no hardware acceleration" message on login that opens additional drivers dialog. When running additional drivers nothing is found.

I've been stumbling around the net for the last 2 hours trying to figure out the magic steps to install the proper driver. No joy.

My question is, based on inxi output, what is my next step?

Thanks in advance.

Post by mikaelrask »

hey and welcome to the forum and linux mint, your problem is that your using a older kernal: 5.4.0-135 for newer hardware.
UEFI: American Megatrends LLC. v: FP655U504 date: 09/13/2022.

Device-1: AMD driver: N/A bus ID: 04:00.0 chip ID: 1002:1638

open up the driver manger in linux mint and install the 5.15 kernel if it is available and see if that can help you out with the driver, if 5.15 should not be be there then you can install linux mint 21 it's the latest release of linux mint it comes with kernel 5.15. could also be that the 5.15 kernel might be to old.

good luck

Thanks mikaelrask.

I think that action reduces to, how do I tell Linux Mint wire up the 5.15 kernel to linux-image-generic and linux-headers-generic packages. I have scripts that use the aliases, like after removing old kernels. (And I _thought_ linux-image-generic and linux-headers-generic were supposed to be aliases for the latest kernel offered by the platform...)

Do you know how I can tell Linux Mint to tie linux-image-generic and linux-headers-generic to the 5.15 kernel?

Thanks again.

Ok, so Linux Mint 21 looks out of reach, too:

I feel like I'm back at 1995 with all these video problems. This is so frustrating...

Hello noloader

Can you open Update Manager/View/Linux Kernels? Do you see something like this?

Why do you have scripts for something which can be automated in Update Manager?

Here are instructions for upgrading to the 5.15 kernel:
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Make sure 5.15 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
  • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.
To automate kernel clean-up:
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select Edit > Preferences.
  • Click the Automation tab (far right tab).
  • Go to the last section, Automated Maintenance, and enable "Remove obsolete kernels and dependencies".

I remotely administer the box over SSH.

These steps do not work over SSH. I have to drive across town to do these things.

Do you know how to wire-up linux-image-generic and linux-headers-generic to a different kernel? Or is it always hard-coded to something determined by Canonical/Ubuntu?

Thanks again.

By the way, one of the side effects of working over SSH is, I never realized Mint 21 was released and available because no messages were provided in the terminal. I learned about Mint 21 in this thread.

The UI prompts Mint may be showing to the user has no effect on the senior citizens who are surfing the web. They don't know what the boxes mean, or what they should do with them.

Ubuntu does a good job of informing folks of new releases during SSH login in the terminal. They occasionally print a message that says something like, "a new release is available, and run do-release-upgrade to upgrade to the new release." do-release-upgrade works over SSH, and does not require an admin to drive to the site to perform an upgrade.

Ubuntu's business is based on servers so it makes sense they would update folks through SSH login. Linus Mint's primary use is not servers.

People who set up computers for senior citizen family members usually set everything up before they give the computer to the family member. You seem to be blaming us that did not happen.

AMD graphics drivers are in the kernel. They are not installed separately and a Ryzen 5000 series computer is quite new. The inxi data you posted also indicates the wireless driver is missing, but since you are remoting in I'm guessing they are set up with Ethernet.

If you want to keep updated with Linux Mint happenings, you can follow the Linux Mint Blog.

I don't know what you mean by "wiring up". There are separate package for both of those for each individual kernel. There is not a common image-generic and a common headers-generic and then the individual kernels attached to each (if that's what you mean by wiring up?).

The 5.15 kernel is an HWE (hardware-enablement ) kernel for LM20.3. (It is the LTS kernel for LM21.)

Checking Synaptic Package Manager, I'm seeing linux-generic-hwe-20.04 and linux-generic-hwe-20.04-edge both as installing the latest 5.15 kernel and both indicate "Complete Generic Linux kernel and headers" so my guess is installing either of those should work to pull in all the necessary packages.

Linux Mint 21 fixed the video problems. The machine has hardware acceleration. Thanks.

Sound does not work. The desktop speakers use the headset jack, and I can't seem to get sound to work with it. The sound plumbing wants to use the HDMI port for sound and refuses to move from it. I'll fix it with a set of USB speakers, which I confirmed to work.

Thanks again.
