Vincent suggested on another thread that I try this forum section for help with finding a graphics driver for my new laptop so I don't have to keep using nomodeset and acpi=off and then having to force a shutdown with the power button.

Here is the output from inxi -Fc 0:

System: Host carolyn-laptop Kernel 2.6.32-21-generic x86_64 (64 bit) Distro Linux Mint 9 Isadora
CPU: Dual core Intel Pentium B960 (SMP) cache 2048 KB flags (sse3 nx lm) bmips 8780.3
Clock Speeds: (1) 800.00 MHz (2) 800.00 MHz
Graphics: Card Intel Sandy Bridge Integrated Graphics Controller X.Org 1.7.6 Res: 1368x768@0.0hz
GLX Renderer Software Rasterizer GLX Version 2.1 Mesa 7.7.1 Direct Rendering Yes
Audio: Card Intel Cougar Point High Definition Audio Controller
Network: Card-1 Realtek RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller driver r8169 v: 2.3LK-NAPI at port 3000
Card-2 RaLink Device 5390
Disks: HDD Total Size: 750.2GB (0.3% used) 1: /dev/sda TOSHIBA MK7575GS 750.2GB
Partition: ID:/ size: 671G used: 2.5G (1%) fs: ext4 ID:swap-1 size: 18.22GB used: 0.00GB (0%) fs: swap
Info: Processes 162 Uptime 1 min Memory 339.3/5930.9MB Client Shell inxi 1.

As you can see, I've put Isadora on temporarily, but I really want to be able to run Mint 13 properly when it comes out.
Any suggestions would be very welcome.
Many thanks.

Well, that seems to have worked OK. Thank you remoulder, you've saved a new laptop from becoming a sold-as-nearly-new laptop :D

And thank you Vincent for directing me to the right thread.

I think I can call this one solved at last, about after about 2 months of trawling through forums. Hooray!!!!!!!
