I have an Nvidia GeForce GT430 card and I installed the drivers via the "Additional Drivers" preferences panel (cinnamon) along with the NVidia X Server Settings utility. For the most part it's working nicely.
I have an issue where I'm trying to play a game (Half Life 2 under Wine) and the 1024x768 resolution is not available. In the Nvidia Xserver Settings utility that resolution *is* available, however using the standard Preferences -> Displays panel it is not. Normally this wouldn't be a concern since I can select 1024x768 resolution in the Nvidia utility and it sticks, however inside my game that resolution isn't available.
Now I found a dirty hack that can make things work: I can use the NVidia X Server Settings utility to change the resolution to 1024x768, then "Save to X Configuration File" and then change back to 1280x720 (my desired desktop resolution), and then 1024 x 768 is an available option within the cinnamon Preferences->Displays panel (1280x720 is there too) and it is also available within Half Life 2. The problem is after I reboot my system it boots into 1024x768. It appears that using the NVidia X Server Settings utility is only saving one resolution or the other to my Xorg.conf file, and it looks like the NVidia utility conflicts with the cinnamon panel (Nvidia utility has many more resoltuions available).
How can I manually modify /etc/X11/xorg.conf to allow both of the resolutions that I need? It would also be nice if I can clean up the list and remove all the odd resolutions that I don't need.

Re: NVidia Xserver Settings Screen Resolution Conflict
Anybody?
I tried modifying the "metamodes" option to the following:
That sort of worked and fixed my steam/half-life problem, however when I log into my xbmc session (immediately launches XBMC, no cinnamon) it's at 1280x768 which results in the bottom of the display not showing on my screen. Within XBMC, that's the only resolution available and I need 1280x720 to get the full view. I find this weird because 1280x768 isn't specified in my xorg.conf file (though under the Displays panel it appears as an available option).
Code: Select all
Section "Screen"
# Removed Option "metamodes" "1280x720_60 +0+0; 1280x720 +0+0"
# Removed Option "metamodes" "1024x768_60 +0+0"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Device0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24
Option "TwinView" "0"
Option "TwinViewXineramaInfoOrder" "DFP-0"
Option "metamodes" "1280x720_60 +0+0"
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
EndSubSection
EndSection
Code: Select all
Option "metamodes" "1280x720_60 +0+0; 1024x768 +0+0"
Re: NVidia Xserver Settings Screen Resolution Conflict
I made some progress in my confuiguration settings, and now there's only one remaining issue.
Since it seems that nobody is able to help, I'll at least post my progress in case someone else runs into a similar problem.
The solution was learning NVIDIA's syntax for the "metamodes" parameter. I'm now playing half-life at 1920x1080 and all is good - it switches when I launch the game, and immediately switches back to 1280x720 when I quit back to cinnamon.
The only little problem now is that my Mint login screen isn't centered. It's at the correct resolution of 1280x720 however it's shifted way up to the upper left. Unfortunately I've searched and can't find anything about this. I'm hoping I get some more help from the forums than I have so far!

Re: NVidia Xserver Settings Screen Resolution Conflict
Can anybody help with this? I've searched and searched, yet still haven't solved this problem. At the login window for Mint (14 - Cinnamon) my screen resolution is correct however the desktop area is extended much bigger than my actual display size. If I move the mouse, it does the pan-and-scan (not sure exactly what it's called) to move the display. In addition to this, the font for my username/password is too big now. This all started around the time I was messing with my nvidia drivers and installed them using the binary directly from nvidia rather than the package. The only little problem now is that my Mint login screen isn't centered. Where can I change the display settings for my login screen?
