How to Verify Color Quality (# of colors)
Posted: Fri Feb 23, 2007 11:28 pm
Less than 24 hours ago, I successfully set up LinuxMint for the first time.
I installed LinuxMint from an ISO image that I had downloaded just yesterday.
My graphics card is an NVIDIA Geforce 7500. Its maximum number of colors (color quality) in Windows XP is 32 bit. The other setting is 16 bit.
Question: In LinuxMint, where and how can I verify the equivalent color quality setting? I have no idea what the setting is other than screen resolution.

check your xorg.conf and search the label Default Depth... it should be 24

Thanks, from the file system level and "computer", I did a search using File Browser for xorg.conf. Nothing.
(Aside, I found LinuxMint's File Browser a bit counter intuitive to use.)
Can I search using Terminal? If so, do I log in as root (sudo)? What would be the command line, please?

yeah, you can use the terminal to search...
there is many method to find: find
to use locate/slocate you need to create a database... it's simple... just do this in a terminal:
now you can find with locate command just doing
if you want more info
said that, the file you want is in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Thank you |_NiGhTmArE_|
Using the locate command in Terminal, I found an xorg.conf file in /etc/X11/
(strange that File Browser's search couldn't find it, but once I knew the path, I could navigate to it in File Browser.)
Anyway, using Gedit, there was no match for Default Depth. A search on Default provided found matches.
THe first one says, "Don't specify DefaultColorDepth unless you know what your are doing. It will override the driver's preferences which can cause the X server not to run if the host doesn't support the depth."
I can see four entries for Modes "1280x800"; each shows one depth: 8, 15, 16, or 24. It's not obvious to me which one applies. (All I want to do it verify which one is in use.)
Any ideas where I can verify (see) which color depth is in use, please? (I don't want to edit digital photos if the max depth is limited.)

Go ahead and add:
to the Screen section of the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.

In a terminal window you can find out what it currently is by doing this:
xdpyinfo | grep "depth of root"
