[Solved] Re: ATI radeon X2300, CPU overload

Post by Thor333 »

Hi everybody,

I'm on HP Compaq 6910p, with a AMD ATI RV516/M64-S Moblity Radeon X2300.
I'm new to Linux, began with Ubuntu, not very satisfying, graphical interface not so friendly, but no graphical drivers problems.
A friend recommanded me Linux Mint, looked good, wanted to try, here we go.

So, new installation with Mint 15, impossible to boot. I tried Mint 14, same thing. Discovered recovery mode, allowed to connect.

I tried the hardware proprietary driver module (surely not the actual name, translation problems) , and i don't have any driver to switch to.

I searched the internet, found in this forum the post about ATI radeon graphics, and the free source drivers stuff.
BUT in the same time in the forum somewhere it is said Do not resurrect support topics older than 6 months, and the ATI post is 4 years old. (yeah, 2009, i know, i feel old too...)

So maybe there will be another answer...

So my problems with my graphical drivers?
I'm obliged to boot in recovery mode each time (long and unfriendly) or my screen stay fully black, i can't make my computer sleep or hibernate or colors go crazy on wake ups, and videos are not running really smooth. I don't even dare to play...
And cinnamon is taking 70% of my CPU all the time...

Someone have a begin of an answer?
Thanks

Thanks for the rapid answer. I used the framakey version of ubuntu (http://www.framakey.org/), so i'm not so sure.
If i say something like Ubuntu-Linux 11.10 or 12.04, it sounds like ok?

I found that, too

ubuntu-artwork 57
ubuntu-defaults-french 0.1
ubuntu-desktop 1.267
ubuntu-docs 12.04.4
ubuntu-extras-keyring 2010.09.27
ubuntu-keyring 2011.11.21
ubuntu-minimal 1.267
ubuntu-mono 0.0.40
ubuntu-sounds 0.13
ubuntu-sso-client 3.0.0-0ubuntu1
ubuntu-sso-client-gtk 3.0.0-0ubuntu1
ubuntu-standard 1.267
ubuntu-system-service 0.2.2

Is this enough informations?

Mint 13 is based on Ubuntu 12.04, Mint 14 and 15 are based on newer Ubuntu editions. You could probably try Mint 13 on your computer.

This looks like 12.04 indeed.

Yep, it worked. Thanks.
Too bad for olivia because :
1 - i really liked mint 15, 13 has really been improved
2 - mint 13 don't hibernate... no more than ubuntu i guess.
Let's discover mint 13!
