Hey, I can't tell if my Radeon 3200 is being used or not. If not how do I install it? Running Mint 15 64 bit Cinnamon on Compaq 515 lappy. Pic is the System Info. Thanks in advance for any help.

Do not install fglrx.

Read Mint14 release note first.
http://linuxmint.com/rel_nadia.php

Sadly Mint15 release note did not have it covered, but it is the same issue

Code: Select all

AMD Radeon HD 2xxx-4xxx series card

The ATI drivers for these cards are now available in a separate branch called legacy series. Unfortunately these legacy drivers (version 12.6) have not been updated to work with Xorg 1.13.

If you own one of these cards you can either:

Use the default Open Source drivers which come with Linux Mint
Downgrade Xorg and install the Legacy ATI drivers as explained at http://www.ubuntuvibes.com/2012/10/how-to-install-amd-catalyst-legacy.html

Thanks wayne128. Yes, I tried that fglrx thing. Somehow I got back to a running desktop. Is there any reason to prefer the default open source drivers over the legacy ATI or is there no big difference? Thanks again for clarifying the situation. The net was a bit convoluted on this. :D

The free Radeon driver is Linux friendly.
However many people reported to have two majoy issues
1. 3d is poor
2. run at hotter temp.

For my HD5450, Radeon run 10 degC hotter than ati propriatery driver.
and proprietary is super on 3D.

Your case is older ATI card , AMD already dropped support and thus you have to fall back to older ati driver, AMD called it legacy and works with only older xorg.

If you could get your old card work on New Distros, then it is a very nice bonus.

All my attempt to install old ati card with new distros, new xorg is 100% BSOD

Well that was a waste of an hour and half. Couldn't get the proprietary driver to work. No BSOD but the same screen as fglrx when I installed fglrx legacy. It was a nice try besides lappy runs fine. Thanks for your help, wayne128
