Optimus Bumblebee Freezing / GeForce 540M

Postby SavageWolf » Tue Aug 04, 2015 7:13 am

Okay, this system is a Dell XPS 15 L502X with an integrated Intel graphics card and a GeForce GT 540M card with Optimus technology. I use bumblebee and opti/primusrun, which seem to work fine. Using Nvidia drivers 331, but the problem also occurs in 304.

After a while of playing a game (basically any game) with opti/primusrun the game freezes with:
"NVRM: os_schedule: Attempted to yield the CPU while in atomic or interrupt context"
in the syslog.

The graphics hang (I'm not sure if the game continues in the background or not) and the application needs to be killed using SIGKILL. Previously the process (or Bumblebee's XServer, can't remember) would become uninterruptable and the graphics card would not work for future invocations (but a few times messing around I think I managed to get it to work by removing kernel modules in some way). However, the last two times I tried, killing the process was enough to "free" the memory card. No matter what though, the integrated card (which runs the rest of the desktop) still works fine.

This has been happening for a while now, at least a year I think; I just put up with it. The card seems to work fine in Windows (Vista or 7, I think), but I'm not sure if that's because I don't use it enough.

Could someone let me know of any possible solutions to this, or what could be causing it?

EDIT:
Okay, so I've been informed that Nvidia Prime is in fact a thing, and I've set it up. I can now use my computer connected to a TV, which I have been doing to test it out. During so my computer has powered off 3 times. Not sure if it's due to the TV or not, but I'll update this if it crashes again. This laptop is rather old and I'm thinking of just getting a new one, actually.

EDIT2:
Yep, using prime and then playing a game crashes the entire computer (requiring a REISUB and am unable to switch ttys) after a few mins of play. Seems to work when not playing a game though.

EDIT3:
Nope. Crashes, but only after a few hours or so.
