Hybrid Graphics not working (Linux Mint 17.2 Cinnamon)

Post by logico204 » Tue Aug 04, 2015 11:00 pm

Hi all,

I recently installed Linux Mint 17.2 and there seems to be a problem with it enabling my NVIDIA graphics. I immediately installed the recommended proprietary driver. The first couple of days I saw the system working, being able to switch between the integrated Intel graphics and my NVIDIA GPU (NVIDIA GT 720M). Now by default it says active graphics: "Unknown", and when I try to switch to the NVIDIA GPU it merely shows me an 'X' icon with no further information. I tried looking for recent tutorials for my problem but didn't seem to find one that matched my problem. Installing bumblebee, for example, did not do anything.

I'm a new user and am learning linux so I was wondering if someone might be of help.

Thanks

Please generate an overview of your system like this:
- launch a terminal window and make it full screen, to avoid chopped lines;
- copy/paste this command into the terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
(if you type: the letter F is a capital letter)

Press Enter.

Copy/paste the output in your next message.

Also have this problem, it presented itself after updating nvidia-settings and libxnvctrl0 to 355.06 with the 2015-08-04 update.

Now can't use Nvidia GPU (see screenshot). I've tried completely purging nvidia-drivers, going back to 340.76 and 346.82. Nothing works.

Should I try and fix this or is a system wipe needed?

Your screenshot looks like the issue I had.

I saw the same post. I followed the procedure there but I ended up breaking my cinnamon. Reinstalling the drivers and bumblebee only partially restored it; It was freezing and none of the icons were showing. Seeing as I'm new to Linux, I just decided to reinstall Linux Mint to prevent any further damage I may be doing to the system. It seemed to do the trick and optimus is working fine.
