NVidia GTX 980 Works or Not?

Post by PhyChm »

First, still green when it comes to Linux but I started on Fedora 24 but I switched to Mint after Fedora kept breaking both my Laptop and Desktop with kernel updates and as a Physics/Chemistry major I can't be having that. So something I noticed that I wanted to ask about. My GTX 980 is a no go on Mint, worked fine on Fedora 24 but that was kernel 4.5.5 (and 4.6.3 before they bricked my OS).

So I noticed that the kernel version is 4.4.0 I think. I run a triple monitor setup with two cards, one 980 and one 760. The 760 always works, and I keep it two screens primary on it for this reason however has anyone gotten the 980 to work with the proprietary drivers? I have never had good luck with NVidia's proprietary drivers on any Linux distro including my recent Mint migration. The driver install went fine however NVidia's drivers began forcing Cinnamon to crash -- jerks.

Idon't know about a GTX 980, but I have both a GTX 960 and a GTX 950 (individually) working fine with Fedora 23 and LM 17.3 KDE with SSD install, and LM 18 Cinnamon/MATE/XFCE/KDE (beta) on Live USB tests.

I had tested a 950, 960, 970 and now a 980 on Fedora 24 (kernels 4.4.0 - 4.6.3).

Fedora 24 they all worked except the 970. In all honesty... I see why if you google Linux and NVidia we get Linus' Middle Finger. I tried forcing a kernel update in Linux Mint to 4.5.4 but, kernel works great but the 980 still didn't. But its an unsupported kernel so I'm hardly surprised - obviously its not a kernel issue alone.

Again, I should state that it did work on Fedora 24 4.5.5 so it probably means ancillary support is missing in Mint just yet.

EDIT: Just realized I hadn't tried kernel 4.5.4 and proprietary drivers on Linux Mint - didn't work either . Ok, maybe i'm not suprised lol.
