Extrapolating from your log info, you are running Linux Mint 17.1 with kernel 4.4.0-47-generic. Not sure if this has any bearing on your problem, but I've seen cautions posted about using the most recent kernels with older hardware. I think support for older HW is no longer there.

Maybe the OS is not properly detecting your display's properties. Have you tried Menu > Preferences > Display to select your output and resolution yet?
Linux Mint 18.2 x86_64, Cinnamon 3.4.6 on kernel 4.10

Please generate an overview of your system like this:
- Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window);
- make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines;
- copy/paste this command into the terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
(if you type: the letter F is a capital letter)

Press Enter.

Copy/paste the output in your next message.

As Atypical User already suggested: does the display setting tool in Mate, offer you any other resolutions?

Check the HP website for a newer BIOS. When available, install it.

If the BIOS update isn't sufficient, launch Update Manager - panel: Edit - Update policy. Select the most aggressive update policy ("Always update everything"), apply all updates and reboot.

After the reboot, regardless whether this helped or not, change your update policy to a more cautious one.

You could try to force the resolution under xrandr to see if it works.

http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-change-di ... randr.html

If it works and you want to make the changes permanent mint needs this file edited etc/mdm/init/Default as per the article.

I'm back !

After
cvt 1600 900.....i copy the answer....
then
xrandr --newmode "1600x900_59.90" 118.80 1600 1696 1864 2128 900 901 904 932 -HSync +Vsync
xrandr --addmode VGA1 1600x900_59.90
xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1600×900

the screen display the good definition. without problems
when i push : gksudo gedit /etc/gdm/Init/Default ==> i guess: no file found ?

and after the reboot the computer says unable to use the previous screen definition !

tks

In mint the file you need to edit is etc/mdm/Init/Default

The xrandr code goes AFTER this line :

PATH="/usr/bin:$PATH"
OLD_IFS=$IFS
